Ten champs crowned at NSW Bodyboard Titles

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 May, 2014 - The final day of the NSW Bodyboard State Titles resumed at Jones Beach today in clean and improved three-to-four foot (1.5 – 2.0m) conditions to wrap up the first contest of the two-event series.

Yesterday’s Open Drop Knee division standout Corey O’Donnell (Copacabana) managed to save his best until last when he threw down a series of risky and critical manoeuvres to snatch the title in the final 30 seconds of the heat. Despite holding down the lead for the majority of the final, Martin Fowler (Adamstown Heights) had to settle for second when O’Donnell locked in a much-needed 7.33 wave score (out of a possible 10 points) to claim the coveted title.

After scoring a late entry into the Open Men division and seeing his brother Darcy Bourke take out the Junior Men final, Joe Bourke (Copacabana) proceeded to tear apart his competition to claim the Open Men title. The bodyboarder was able to perform a chain of aerial antics to net himself a 14.13 heat total (out of a possible 20 points) to claim the victory. Event standout Liam Gray put up a valiant effort, but ultimately had to settle for the runner-up spot with a heat total of 12.47 points.

In the Open Women division, Everline Mussi locked in an impressive 12.83 heat total to take a narrow win over Shauna Gillett who finished in the runner-up spot by less than 0.2 points.

Sisters Teigan and Sam Gillett (Martinsville) both managed to claim first and second respectively in the Junior Women final. The duo locked in a handful of respectable scores to claim the top spots and knock Sophie Leathers down into third spot.

Matthew Mytka (Kogarah) performed an eclectic mix of manoeuvres to claim himself the Senior Mens title ahead of Andrew Turnbridge (Surry Hills) and Danny Kaurinovic (Mona Vale) who took second and third respectively.

Central Coast bodyboarder Darcy Bourke (Copacabana) added another title to the Central Coast kitty, when he locked in multiple high-scoring waves, to claim the Junior Men title. Bourke, managed to notch up a solid heat total of 15.67 to take first place ahead of Jake Dunn (Harrington).

2013 National Grand Masters champion Greg Chambers (Mona Vale) added another trophy to his mantelpiece when he took down Paul Mace (Elermore Vale) to win the Grand Masters title. Despite scoring an interference in the final, Chambers was able to overcome his opposition to take the crown.

The main location for Event One was Kiama Surf beach, located in the heart of Kiama with back-up locations at Jones Beach, Bombo Beach and Werri Beach. Event Two will hit Harrington later in the year.

Total points from both events will be tallied and used to select the team to represent the state at the 2014 national titles, which will take place at the Australian Surf Festival in Coffs Harbour in August.

Surfing NSW will implement free club challenges at both State Title events with the winning club from each State Title event claiming $250.00 and the overall winner claiming $500.00.
