Building swell and favorable winds predicted for event

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 October, 2014 - The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by POSCA is set to kick off this Friday at Trigg Beach, with the a swarm of the best  junior surfers from across Australia converging on the Perth metropolitan beaches for the third event of the 2014 series.

Since its inception in 1999, the Rip Curl GromSearch has grown into the biggest grom event series in the world. Specifically designed especially for the 16 years and under surfers and aims to provide male and female surfers the opportunity to showcase their talent in a fun and relaxed environment.

At the same time the series provides ‘groms’ with the competitive experience needed for further development in their surfing careers, and has established itself as a major stepping stone in the development of the future stars of world surfing.

The third stop of the five-event national series, will see over 100 grommets compete across a three day window in six separate divisions. A building swell and favourable winds is pointing towards another memorable WA leg of the Rip Curl GromSearch, after being blessed with perfect conditions in 2013.

"The waves we had last year were simply incredible," said Surfing Western Australia Events Manager Justin Majeks. "It's looking like we will again score some really fun waves with some good sandbanks on offer at Trigg at the moment."

South-West rippers set to make the most of the swell include Jed Mattinson (Margaret River), Baliee Hastie and Yallingup trio Kael Walsh , Duke Nagtzaam and Josh Cattlin. With Pascal Hutchinson (Sorrento), Moses Le Grice (East Fremantle) and Kash Cook (Trigg) will be leading the charge for the local metro surfers.

Western Australian's have tasted plenty of recent success at Rip Curl GromSearch events, with local junior champion Jacob Willcox (Margaret River) finishing second at the International GromSearch Final at Lakey Peak, Indonesia in May. Willcox finished  behind Pat Curren (USA) who is the son of 3x ASP World Champion and surfing icon Tom Curren.

Working in conjunction with Surfing Australia, the Rip Curl GromSearch includes boys’ and girls’ divisions in 16 and under, 14 and under, and 12 and under. The series includes a National Ratings system, which will be used to qualify surfers for the National Final at North Narrabeen.

Current ASP World Tour surfers who have competed in the Rip Curl GromSearch finals include: Gabriel Medina (Brazil), Kolohe Andino (USA), Felipe Toledo (Brazil), Owen Wright (Australia), Jordy Smith (South Africa), Matt Wilkinson (Australia), Tyler Wright (Australia),  Stephanie Gilmore (Australia). Malia Manuel (USA), Sally Fitzgibbons (Australia), Laura Enever (Australia) and Alana Blanchard (Hawaii).
