Munoz wins online voting for Hurley Pro video trials

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 August, 2014 - Carlos Muñoz of Jaco Beach, Costa Rica has been named the winner of the 2014 Hurley Pro Video Trials, the only contest of its kind where the public chooses a wildcard for an Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour event. Muñoz will compete against the ASP Top 34 at the 2014 Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles this September.

With the Costa Rica National Futbol Team leading the charge, the Costa Rican nation united – via social media, web, radio and national television – to back the country’s most talented young surfer. Athletes and celebrities alike showed support, rallying fans to get online and vote for Muñoz. The nationwide mobilization effort enabled Muñoz to dominate the week-long online competition, winning by massive margins each round and beating runner-up Dusty Payne by more than 11,000 votes.

“I have chicken skin right now — this just feels unreal,” said Muñoz, currently ranked No. 53 on the ASP World Qualifying Series and who will be the first Costa Rican ever to compete in an ASP World Championship Tour event. “It has always been my dream to surf against my favorite surfers on the world stage. And now, thanks to my country, my friends, family and sponsors, and thanks to all of Latin America, I get to do just that at one of the best performance waves in the world. I am so thankful for the opportunity and can’t wait to give it my best at Lowers.”

For the second year in a row, fan voting determined the second of two wildcard entries into The Hurley Pro. Top San Clemente surfer Tanner Gudauskas won the local Hurley Pro Trials in a more traditional contest format in July.
“This year was really exciting; we made the push for global entries, with the hopes of someone like Carlos getting the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Hurley VP of Sports Marketing Pat O’Connell. “He’s an amazing surfer and we are really excited to have him here at the Hurley Pro.”

The contest window for The Hurley Pro begins on September 9 and ends September 18.
