Film wins Peter Tro 'Spirit of Surfing' award at Bells

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 January, 2015 - The Bells Beach Surf Film Festival has been run for another year. Eight surf films over four nights including three Australian Premieres. The surfing community in Torquay was once again thrilled with the high standard of films coming from Australia and around the world.

This Festival Jury decided the best films of the festival with Joe Guglielmino’s surf odyssey STRANGE RUMBLINGS IN SHANGRI LA winning BEST FILM, Ton Ojeda’s retro rocker EXPENCIVE PORNO FILM winning BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY and Jack McCoy announced as the winner of the inaugural FILM MAKERS RECOGNITION AWARD.

The winner of the PETER TROY 'SPIRIT OF SURFING' AWARD was TIERRA DE PATAGONES a surf adventure to the bottom of South America directed by Julian & Joaquin Azulay.

Torquay surfer ,Peter Troy had an amazing influence on surfing around the world for almost three decades. Not only did he start the Bells Beach Surfing Contest with Vic Tantau and the surfing museum in Torquay but his epic surf journey from 1963-1965 was one of the great surf trips of all time.

Winning directors Julian & Joaquin Azulay explained there was a strong family connection with Troy and Australia: “Peter Troy introduced surfing to many places around the world, one of those was Argentina. Ricardo Mangojana invited him to talk about his travels, diving and surfing and he inspired our Dad and his friends to shape their first surfboard in 1963.

So when we told our Dad we got this award it became very special for him as he brought memories back to those times and to us too as it was kind of a legacy done by Peter Troy to our Dad, and our Dad to us. Cheers for more surfing expeditions and for Peter’s Spirit!”

The BELLS BEACH SURF FILM FESTIVAL will be back in January 2016 bringing the best surf films and documentaries from Australia and around the world to Torquay.
