Top 5 Moments of the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Portugal

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 October, 2010 : - - 1. Owen's Perfect 10: It had been all about the barrels in the first two rounds of the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Portugal at Supertubos, but when the contest moved over to the skatepark ramps of Belgas, it was Owen Wright who drastically shifted the approaches of nearly all the surfers left in the event.

While working his way to shore to swap out a buckled board, Owen stroked into a rampy left and launched into a lofty, textbook mute grab. What followed in the remaining rounds at Belgas and clear into the Final at Supertubos was a mind-blowing battle of post-modern aerial surfing, making the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Portugal arguably the most progressive-centric World Tour event to date.

2. Jordy's "Write It Down" Claim

Pat Gudauskas had Jordy on the ropes in Quarterfinal 4 and was on his way to the best result of his 2010 World Tour campaign when Jordy pulled a very Slater-esque last-minute show stopper that left Pat suddenly behind and without any hope to look toward on the horizon.

After Jordy stomped the full-rotation air reverse he looked toward the judges, held out his left hand and made a scribbling motion with his right, not-so-subtley reminding them to write that one down 'cause he had no intention of leaving the party any time soon.

3. Only Slater

It was a tight battle between Kelly Slater and Chris Davidson in their Semifinal dual, but when Slater set a blinding line on a righthand bowl and pushed himself into this long-distance Alley Oop, all Davo had left to do was salute the 9-time World Champ and wish him well in the Final. The projectile Oop was enough for a 9.33 and earned Kelly the highest single wave score of finals day.

4. Damien Hobgood Wins the Battle of the Tubes

The remaining Round 1 heats on Day 2 opened up in post-storm Supertubes and, though the conditions weren't all-time, the early morning heats were a classic battle of the barrel. In the first heat of the day, Damien Hobgood, Fred Patacchia and Luke Stedman enjoyed the best of it, trading off pit after pit.

But it was Damo who clawed into what would be not only the barrel of the day, but the barrel of the event. If it hadn't been the first heat of the day, it's likely Damien would have been looking at a Perfect 10, though the 8.93 was enough to put the heat in his hands and advance him on to Round 3.

5. Ace's Double Barrel

Ace has been on a good run since his Round 5 finish at Trestles and it was looking like he would carry the momentum through the Rip Curl Pro Portugal when he faded into a lengthy tube in his Round 2 heat against Luke Munro, drifted across a flat section and got swallowed again to the tune of a 9.33. Coupled with an 8.67, Ace's total heat score of an 18.00 remained the highest combined total of the entire event.
