Torquay Boardriders Club takes the win at Phillip Island

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 15 December, 2013 -- Torquay Boardriders Club has continued its dominance of Victorian club surfing with a win at the Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle at Cape Woolamai on Phillip Island.

With a strong 4-6ft swell and light onshore winds, the famous beach break of Cape Woolamai dished up some tough conditions for all competitors throughout the day.

“It was pretty tough out there, about 5 foot on the outside banks with some strong rips” said Torquay’s Troy Brooks.

Torquay trailed for a lot of the day thanks to a strong showing from ex-World Tour surfer Glyndyn Ringrose (Phillip Island Boardriders) and Josh Johnson-Baxter (13th Beach Boardriders) in the Skins division.

However it was the combination of Cahill Bell-Warren and Zoe Clarke in the Pairs who kept Torquay alive leading into the Teams division. The young pair was able to take out the pairs final in the challenging conditions over 13th Beach’s Simon Collier and Jemima Hutchins.

The Teams division was dominated by Torquay with five of their six scoring rides in the good to excellent range to take the division over 13th Beach who placed second.

Peninsula put up a strong effort with Caiden Fowler nailing a 9-point ride however the team could not match the depth of one of its oldest rivals finishing in third. Phillip Island finished in fourth with Point Lonsdale in fifth in the Teams Division.

With the win, Torquay Boardriders Club will earn a spot at the National Final to be held at Cronulla in Janruary.

“It should be fun to go and mix it with the big boys in Cronulla. I think we should do pretty well up there, we have some good up and coming kids and a few ex-WCT surfers. Hopefully we do alright” said Brooks.

Team manager and member, Cahill Bell-Warren was stoked to get the win.

“I couldn’t be happier. Especially going into the Teams Division, and being behind 13th Beach on the rankings it was good to get ahead of them on the final division.”

“Its great to see the Australian Government have got on board and taken alcohol out of the sport. There are so many juniors in each club and it’s always good to set the right example from the beginning.”

“I’m really looking forward to the national finals in Cronulla, it sounds like it’s going to be bigger than a World Tour event!”

13th Beach will also be joining Torquay at the National Final, placing second overall and claiming the second allocation for Victoria. The National Final will be held at Cronulla on Janruary 25-26, 2014.

Final Overall Results:

Torquay – 4800 Points (Qualified)
13th Beach – 4620 Points (Qualified)
Peninsula – 4010 Points
Phillip Island – 3890 Points
Point Lonsdale – 3170 Points

In total, $105,000 is up for grabs across the entire National Series including the National Final. There is $30,000 available across the seven State qualifying events, while $75,000 will be split between the 16 clubs that make the National Final.
