Torquay retains Victorian Teams Title for second year running

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 September, 2013 : - - Bells Beach, Victoria - Torquay Boardriders Club have taken out the prestigious Victorian Teams Titles Presented by Be the Influence for the second year running in incredible 4-5ft waves at Bells Beach.

Since its inception in 1976, the Victorian Teams Titles has been an annual event which sees the top Victorian Boardriders Clubs compete against each other. Under a new format, mirroring the upcoming Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle, all clubs surfed a pairs division, skins & tag team formats.

Continuing with the long standing rivalry, Torquay Boardriders Club and Phillip Island Boardriders Club duelled it out in the final stages of the Tag Team component of the day with the lead changing multiple times in the final 10 minutes.

Longtime club spokesman, Ross Slaven, was pleased to retain the prized trophy on home soil. "We got great waves and its great to have everyone here in real and challenging waves at bells Beach...I like the new format, having the skins and the pairs breaks up the day a bit and provides some variety but the tag team is the highlight of the day for everyone" continued Slaven.

"Phillip Island always have some great surfers and push us every year led by Glyndyn (Ringrose). They are a great rival and we enjoy surfing against them."

The event saw 3 former ASP World Championship Tour Surfers compete, Glyndyn Ringrose (Phillip Island), Troy Brooks (Torquay) & Nic Muscroft (Torquay). Brooks and Muscroft were both integral parts of the winning performance from Torquay in the tag team, locking in strong waves in quick succession.

"Its great to see some world class surfers surfing for their clubs and having the junior surfers involved shows them just what is required to make it. The more junior that get to see surfing of that caliber the better it will be for Victorian surfing" said Slaven.

Torquay took out every format for the day winning the skins, pairs and tag team format. 13th Beach Boardriders Club placed in third overall with Penninsula Surfriders Club in fourth.

In the B Grade Division, Point Lonsdale took out the overall standings winning the tag team and the skins division over Portland and South Coast boardriders clubs. Point Lonsdale had strong showings from experienced competitors, Lachlan Kerney and Jade Ogilvie in the tag team.

Portland took out the pairs division in B grade, with former Rip Curl Pro finalist Adam Robertson leading the charge for the newly formed club from the South West.
