Bud Light Lime Surf Series Labor Day Cup enjoys solid waves

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 September, 2011 : - - Despite fog, overcast skies, blustery winds, and water temps in the low 50’s, the Bud Light Lime Surf Series (BLLSS), Labor Day Cup in Ventura, CA enjoyed solid waves with surf occasionally offering 10-12’ faces. While there were many standout performances, Torrey Meister from the Big Island of Hawaii and Serena Brooke from Coolangatta, Australia took home the titles at the series final event of the year.

Meister posted a 19.02 in the finals with combination of airs and solid turns edging out San Clemente’s Nate Yeomans, Ventura local Timmy Curran, and fellow Hawaiian Roy Powers in the final. In the women’s division, Australian Serena Brooke led throughout the heat despite outstanding surfing from Kyla Langen (Catalina, CA), Jenna Balester (Huntington Beach, CA), and Erica Hosseini (Newport Beach, CA).

Australian Jay Davies and Timmy Curran electrified the crowd with some massive airs in the Expression Session, but it was Timmy’s younger brother Nathaniel Curran who took home the title after throwing a giant Air Reverse Indie Grab. Nate Yeomans received the “Best Mustache” award while Joel Centeio and partner Jesse Merle-Jones won the Competitor’s Corn Hole Tournament.

The event saw a diverse athlete pool that included former World Champion Sunny Garcia, World Tour Surfers Kalani Robb, Kekoa Bacalso, Ben Bourgeois, and Jay Thompson. As well as free surfers Benji Weatherley, Sean Moody, Dion Agius, Jason “Rat Boy” Collins, Che Stang, and Mike Losness - who won the first BLLSS event in San Clemente earlier this year. Several local area surfers participated in the event including the Curran brothers, Mike and Matt McCabe, Adam Virs, Sean Hayes, Chad Compton, Killian Garland, Jeremy Ryan, and Corry Arrambide – who lead the contest after the first two rounds. Video highlights and features from the Labor Day Cup will be posted on Surfline each Thursday beginning September 8th with new episodes each week for 4 weeks.

Owned and produced by IMG, the BLLSS is an ASP Specialty Event and sponsored by Anheuser-Busch’s Bud Light Lime brand. Surfline is the Official Forecaster of the series and BLLSS partners include the Mauli Ola Foundation, an organization that assists children with Cystic Fibrosis and other breathing disorders and the San Onofre Foundation whose mission is to provide education, protection, and preservation for the California State Parks at San Onofre and San Clemente State Beaches.
