Longboarders Open the Tradies Surfmasters at Cronulla Beach
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 November, 2011 : - - Welcomed to the beautiful beaches of Cronulla by summery conditions, Longboard competitors opened up the spectacular annual community event The Tradies Surfmasters, as part of the Beach Bop Festival 2011. Event officials and local surfers assessed the conditions early, making a decision to run the Longboard contingent of the Tradies Surfmasters and crowning five champions at The Wall in Cronulla today.
Cronulla surfer Brad Whittaker took out the youngest of the divisions (Over 40s), with a combination of nose rides and carves on his back hand that wowed judges and fellow competitors, as he rode his way to winning on his maiden event entry. This is the first time Ive competed, I just snuck into the over 40s and it has been a great day so far, I had a whole lot of fun out there with all the guys and tomorrow Im back out there for the short board, said Whittaker.
Brad Whittaker has been heavily involved in the event since its conception 4 years ago, as Manager of active communities for Sutherland Shire Council promoting a healthy active lifestyle, he is proud at how the event has developed. Whilst surfers love surfing, the broader community love the surfing vibe, the history, the old surfboards, it just opens the surfing event to a broader demographic in our community and makes a great connection for Tradies to put on a free event for he community, said Whittaker.
Tradies support a whole range of different sporting groups, reaching the over 40s group and collaborating with Surfing NSW to run a Surfmasters event, has seen this develop into the highly anticipated Beach Bop Festival, said Whittaker. Robert Smith (Cronulla) took the Over 45s in trademark style, fancy footwork on the clean two foot waves gave him the edge over fellow local Tony Boyd whos series of cut backs and re entries just came under giving Smith first place.
The community atmosphere continued in the water and competition between the old boys was friendly but a fine line was drawn between surfers in the over 50 division. John Skinner (Warilla) took first place over Peter Toby, Laure Miller (Matraville) and Stephen Hartnett (Wombarra) who placed second, third and fourth respectively. Skinner went into the draw for a Jackson Longboard along with all first place getters from their divisions. It was Paul ODonnell who took home the beautiful piece of craftsmenship after winning the Over 55 division.
Taking home a 12 month subscription of the soon to be released Foam Symmetry magazine which celebrates alternate surf culture - was Paul Detmold for the community surfing spirit he showed emulating the weekends activities. VB came on board yet again with Surfing NSW and a VB Slab of the day was given to Glenn moore for the best wave of the day at the Wall for the opening day of the Tradies Surf Masters.
The event resumes tomorrow for the shortboard contingent, it is fully mobile in the Cronulla area with North Cronulla Beach, Elouera Beach, Wanda Beach, Cronulla Beach and Shelly Beach all venue options. The daily Running Schedule and Contest location will be confirmed on the Event Hotline (0458 247 212) after 6:45am each day of the event.
