TravelSim Team Australia names 2014 ISA World Junior Champ team
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 18 December, 2013 -- World champion TravelSim Team Australia has named a strong side to defend its title at next year’s ISA World Junior Championship in Ecuador.
To be held from 5-13 April at Salinas Beach, Ecuador, the titles will attract more than 300 of the world’s best junior surfers from more than 30 countries.
TravelSim Team Australia won this year’s event in Nicaragua ahead of Hawaii and the United States with Western Australia’s Jacob Willcox also bringing home the Under 16 title. Willcox returns next year for a tilt at the Under 18 title.
“There is an incredible amount of depth in the team, but it’s not just about their performance as an individual surfer,” said Surfing Australia National Coach Andy King.
“The world juniors is a team event, and although surfing is very much an individual sport we had to consider peer respect and those who want to surf for the team as a whole and not just on their own.
“Selection wasn’t just based on results at the national junior titles. Results at pro juniors were the major focus, and will be again in 2014, and then the national juniors through to regional events.”
King also spoke highly of the next crop of surfers expected to be pushing for national selection in the years ahead.
“The most impressive thing about our recent junior titles at Kiama was the Under 14s division,” he said. “To be honest some could have almost qualified for the Under 18s the way they were surfing. The talent in that age group is amazing and the future is looking very bright.”
