Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 8 October, 2013 : - - Supertubos Peniche Portugal - The world’s best surfers have converged on the sand-bottom barrels of Supertubos for the second and final stop of the ASP’s European leg, the Rip Curl Pro Portugal presented by Moche from October 9 – 20, 2013.

Competition is expected to commence tomorrow morning at Stop No. 9 of 10 on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), as the world’s best surfers battle for requalification for next season’s elite tour as well as this year’s world surfing crown.

Heading into Portugal, five surfers remain in mathematical contention for the 2013 ASP World Title, Mick Fanning (AUS) 32, Kelly Slater (USA), 41, Jordy Smith (ZAF), 25, Taj Burrow (AUS), 35, and Joel Parkinson (AUS), 32. Though Fanning and Slater are clear frontrunners in the race for the 2013 ASP World Title.

Only Fanning can clinch the crown in Portugal. Fanning acknowledged that his recent win in France was crucial. If Fanning wins the event, Slater will need a 3rd or better to take the title decision to Hawaii and keep his hopes alive for a twelfth world title. Slater acknowledged that he has not been at the top of his game of late.

Defending Rip Cur Pro Portugal champion Julian Wilson (Aus) will be up first tomorrow morning against Fred Pattachia (Haw) and Yadin Nicols (Aus) in the non-elimination round 1 heat. The world no.6 has been in impressive form. Wilson said it was exciting to watch Fanning and Slater battle it out.

U/16’s ISA World Champion Jacob Willcox (Aus) won his wildcard into the main event by defeating an all-European field of Supertubos specialists with his brilliant barrel riding skills. The 16 year-old from Margaret River, West Australia, included the highest wave score of the trials tournament – a 9 point barrel ride – to secure the highly coveted wildcard.

Willcox has drawn eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater (USA) and Kolohe Andino (USA) in round one of competiton. The lanky teenager, who surfed Supertubos for the first time on Monday, said he was looking forward to the match-up. On Sunday, Portuguese national surfing hero and ASP Top 34 surfer Tiago Pires (PRT) officially withdrew from Peniche because of an ongoing knee injury. Pires will be replaced by reigning Portuguese national champion Frederico Morais.

Morais, will be joined by fellow countryman and 19-year-old rising Portuguese star Francisco Alves, who also received an injury wildcard into the main event, replacing Dusty Payne (Hawaii). Alves, from nearby Costa Da Caparica in Lisbon, is arguably the most experienced Supertubos surfers in the draw.
Pires said he would be helping out his compatriots.

Magicseaweed, official forecasters for the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, are calling for a four-to-six foot (1.5 – 2 metre) swell to be on tap for the opening day of the window.
