Bumby seas provide both ramps and heartbreak for many
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 January, 2015 - Some of Australia’s best junior surfers kicked off their Rip Curl GromSearch National Final campaigns when the event kicked off today in difficult three-foot waves at North Narrabeen.
Macy Callaghan (Avoca, NSW) set a solid benchmark in the 16-and-under Girls, performing a barrage of massive backhand snaps and slides. The Central Coast surfer made light work of the bumpy wave-faces and consequently posted an impressive 15.56 heat total (out of the possible 20 points), the highest of the morning. As a result, Callaghan booked her spot straight into the quarterfinals bypassing the second round.
Not to be outdone, fellow NSW Central Coast surfer Kirra-Belle Olsson (Avoca, NSW) managed to post a 14.00 heat total to also claim a heat win in the 16-and-under Girls and bypass the second round.
Reef Heazlewood (Moffatt Beach, Qld), Joe Van Dijk (Phillip Island, Vic), Kael Walsh (Yallingup, WA) and Quinn Bruce (Coolangatta, Qld) all claimed impressive wins in their respective 16-and-under Boys heats. All aforementioned surfers performed an eclectic mix of turns to qualify for the quarterfinals.
Victorians Tane Bowden (Jan Juc, Vic) and Billy Harrison (Barwon Heads, Vic) showed they were a force to be reckoned with in the 14-and-under Boys, both notching up heat totals in excess of 14 points. Mikey Mcdonagh (Lennox Head, NSW) and Tully Wylie (Jan Juc, Vic) will join the aforementioned surfers in the 14-and-under Boys quarterfinals.
Tomorrow's event is expected to kick off at 7.30am. All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.
