Perfect waves, sunny skies and high scores make for memorable finish

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 14 October, 2013 : - - Yesterday's challenging onshore conditions were replaced by postcard perfect barreling waves at Perth's premiere wave location. Waves in the 3-4 feet range were demolished by the best junior surfers from across the country as they set about capturing a prestigious GromSearch title in front of a busy on beach crowd.

Shaun Manners (Margaret River) and Holly Wawn (Avalon, NSW) were the standouts as the pair took out the premier 16 and under divisions in beautiful summer-like conditions.  Manners looked in tune with the ocean enroute to his victory, moving through the semi-finals by threading some of the morning's deepest tubes, taking confidence into the 25 minute blue ribbon final.

Manners fended off visiting surfers Jackson Baker (Merewether, NSW), Reef Doig (Bali, Indonesia) as well as Yallingup's Kael Walsh in an action packed heat that saw less that one and a half points separating first to third. Despite the best aerial attempts from his fellow finalists, Manners' smooth rail to rail surfing saw him  amass a 13.67 heat score (from a possible 20) head of Jackson Baker in second, Doig third and Walsh fourth.

“I’m really happy to win against some quality opposition, to get great waves today was unreal." Said Manner who secured an invite to the GromSearch National final, to be held on the Sunshine Coast, QLD this December.

Holly Wawn proved she's a force to be reckoned with by winning her second event of the 2013 GromSearch series. Wawn was powerful in her attack and scored a heat high 7.67 ride against WA girls Eliza Greene (Yallingup) and Mia McCarthy (Margaret River) and Emi Campbell (Denmark), who finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Yallingup surfers Jack Thomas, Duke Nagtzaam and Kael Walsh proved their hometown is a breeding ground for talent, as the trio went head to head in the 14 and under (14/U) final. Walsh's eye catching display saw him finish less that one point ahead of a determined Duke Nagtzaam in a close result. Walsh's loose and acrobatic manoeuvres were too good for Thomas in third and Moses Le Grice (East Fremantle) in fourth.

"It was a really close one so I'm stoked," said Walsh. "We all surf together and push each other pretty hard in what we do which is good."

Other standouts on finals day included Mikey McDonagh (Lennox Head, NSW) who displayed poise and polish to win the final of the Under-12 Boys. The talented natural-footer threw down an array of technical turns which gave him a sought after victory after finishing second last year in the same event at Trigg.

"I really like it here in WA and to come back over and win this division means heaps to me." Said McDonagh.

Current WA State champion April McPherson (Madurah) wowed the judges as she won both the 12/U girls and 14/U girls divisions. McPherson looked fearless as she tackled the fast breaking waves edging out some of the best up and coming female junior surfers in WA. Shaun Manners was awarded the 'POSCA Wave of the Day' for his near perfect 9.17 barrel ride, which had the crowd in hysterics.

The 'Firewire Performance Award' went to Jack Thomas (Yallingup) for his outstanding power surfing displayed across two divisions. April McPherson and Josh Stanton won the 'Shapers Fins / Surf Life Rising Star Award' for the best up and coming surfers at the event.
