UK junior events end in fun surf at Tolcarne Beach
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 August, 2013 : - - The high tide wedges and picturesque setting of Newquay's Tolcarne Beach provided the perfect platform for the final event of the 2013 Rip Curl Grom Search Presented by Posca.
In what appears to be a running trend of big swells & strong winds for all of the Rip Curl Grom Search events for 2013, contest officials made the call to relocate from Watergate Bay to the less exposed shores of Tolcarne Beach in Newquay, Cornwall.
As the hordes of frothing groms arrived at Tolcarne Beach on Saturday morning, the ocean awoke and a fresh new swell began to filter into the bay. The fun 1-2ft offshore conditions were soon being torn apart by the first round of the Boys Under 12's surfer's, the category also saw a fantastic entry with 18 surfers.
Throughout this year's search the standard of competition has consistently pushed the boundaries, as a mixture of smart competitive surfing blends in with the traditional care free approach of the sport. Following completion of round 1 of the Boys Under 12's heats, the Girls Under 14's semi finals entered the water as keen supporters lined the water's edge to hoot and hollar at every turn and wave ridden.
With the atmosphere building around the contest site POSCA continued in their entertainment for surfers and beach goer's. The gazebo's soon exploded in expressions of design and colour with the free pens on offer as boards, fins and even their fellow competitors became a canvas for their creativity.
'The atmosphere was electric all weekend and it was amazing to see the unique approach to board designs that our pens allow' said Bekki from POSCA.
As the tide pushed up throughout the afternoon the popular high tide wedges at Tolcarne became over run with grom's as the line up turned into an expression session for the surfers, which included Rip Curl riders Jayce Robinson and Lyndon Wake with their impressive array of skills.
Back in the contest areas things were heating up as the Under 16 boys and girls surfers to got amongst the action with stand out performances from Mexico's Eno James and UK Rip Curl rider Angus Scotney.
Day 2 of the event saw a turn in the weather as the sun donned its glorious hat and its ray's engulfed the natural amphitheatre of Tolcarne. Temperatures rose as the crowd's arrived at the beach and the contest officials (to the delight of the parent's) decided on a sociable lunch time start to allow for the best conditions.
The Boy's under 12's surfers got things started, followed by the Girls Under 12's final which saw Welsh girl Ffion Hughes make it 3 in a row taking the title and defeating Bonita Whitelock in the final who performed well to take 2nd.
The Girls Under 14's once again saw great support and local girl Jordy Lowe utilised her abilities to come out on top with a 9.27 heat total win with Ffion Hughes in 2nd, Micha Maguire in 3rd and Jessica Knight in 4th.
Following a thrilling boys semi final round the Girl's Under 16's Girls final enterted the water, greeted by 2-3ft wedges which required both smart and aggressive surfing to master, but Peony Knight revelled the challenge and came out on top with a 12.50 total, whilst Flora Lawton took 2nd, Jordy Lowe 3rd and Mischa Maguire in 4th.
The Boy's Under 12's final saw the progressive skill's of Stan Norman earn him a well deserved win with a 10.50 total, whilst Seth Morris took 2nd, Finn Collins in 3rd and Frankie Bamford in 4th.
The Boy's Under 14's final saw a battle between the new boy from Mexico Eno James take on the 2nd Grom Search event champion Joe Harding, with Eno taking the win with a 10.33 total and Joe on an 8.20, 3rd was given to Welsh boy Cieran Hughes and 4th to Sashka Wardell.
The highly anticipated Boy's Under 16 final saw a repeat of the Under 14's battle as Joe Harding came in 4th but Eno earning an impressive 2nd place with a 8.90 and just pipping joint search champion Max Payne who came in with a 8.67, however North Devon's Will Bailey provided the goods and took the win with a 10.50 total.
The 2013 Rip Curl Grom Search has now come to an end following 3 epic events in South Wales, North Devon and Cornwall. A combination of the best 2 results for each surfer informs the over champions.
Therefore, Will Bailey and Max Payne for the Boy's Under 16's and Peony Knight and Emily Williams for the Girl's Under 16's will now progress on to represent the UK at the European Grom Search Final's to be held 'somewhere in Europe' later this year.
The European final's will see the surfers battle against Europe's other top juniors and battle out to qualify for the World Grom Search Final's to be held at Bells Beach, Australia!
