RVLT Surf Series #2

Ocean Beach Pier, San Diego California
15 August 2015

Record online registrations included over 130 athletes

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 August, 2015 - San Diego - This past weekend saw perfect beach weather, record signups & International turnout for stop # 2 of the 2015 Revolt Summer Surf Series - Pier II Pier - Pro Am

Under warm sunny skies and smaller 1-3ft surf, over 100 surfers made their way to the Ocean Beach Pier last Saturday to compete for cash, prizes, trophies and RSSS Double Season Points.

Record online registrations included over 130 athletes from around the globe. Elite surfers from Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Japan, South Africa & South America competed against some of the top US surfers from Southern California, Hawaii and the East Coast.

The judges had their hands full with ten divisions that included stacked heats for Men & Women's Pro Am, Jr. Men & Women, Grom, Longboard & SUP Surf. The sizable signups required utilizing both north peaks at the OB Pier - heats were running simultaneously & side by side for the first 3 hours of the competition.

A shout to Jay Christenson, Sterling Weatherly and other industry professionals that helped judge the groms & jr. women's heats early in the day.

The small but contestable surf caused some upsets & controversy as top seeded riders succumbed  in the earlier heats & semi finals, including; Vince Boulanger, JD Lewis, Brandon Roberts, Pedro Diaz, Remy Jaboori & Jay Christenson.

High-performance surfing: Big airs & 360's were the rule for the day. Standout performances include; Longboard - Jake Jakels, Men's SUP - Martin Letourneur and Women's SUP - Diane Wenzel. Juniors Sean Purbaugh & Olivia Pessanha - Groms Mick Davey, Jack Gallen & Rapheal Castro / all took home top honors, cool trophys & gift bags.

The final heat of the Men's Pro Am turned into an international shoot-out with Fransisco Bellerin of Venuzuela, Juninho Urcia of Peru, Rigard Smit of South Africa and Jacob Szekely of the United States. Jacob 'Zeke' Szekely pulled off the upset against the International heavy hitters with high scores derived from solid surfing & his local wave knowledge. WSL veteran Bellerin took a close second. Spectators on the beach were all on their feet cheering as the final set rolled thru with just seconds left on the clock. Smit just missed a high scoring 9.0 wave - unfortunately it was logged on his 11th wave of the heat.

Live music, samples, giveaways, raffles & fun beach activities made the event feel more like a festival than a surf contest. Athletes & families were served a hearty pancake breakfast and Hotdog Lunch courtesy of RVLT Surf.

The next event is September 12 - North side of Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach, CA. For more info & online registration go to revoltsurfseries.com
