Grom series shines in fun Cronulla peaks
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 December, 2013 - Cronulla: Day two of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp kicked off today in long-running lefts at Wanda Beach, Cronulla.
Bateau Bay’s Jackson Roberts showed a lot of form early in the morning, seamlessly linking together a combination of solid backhand turns to be rewarded with a heat total of 18.73 (out of a possible 20), the highest of the entire event. The Wahu Surfer Groms Comp is the second time Jackson has locked in a perfect score in a heat at Cronulla in 2013, having added a perfect 10-point ride into his scoreline in the 2013 Rip Curl GromSearch back in September.
Fellow Bateau Bay surfer Hughie Vaughan blew the crowd away in the Under-8 Mixed division, successfully paddling into several waves without parental assistance. The micro-sized natural footer took out the final with a heat total of 15.67, while Coffs Harbour’s Hunter Winkler finished in the runner up spot.
Day one standout Gabi Spake continued to build on her earlier success claiming the victory in the Under-10 Girls. The Collaroy surfer surfed well beyond her years, throwing down a chain of technical carves and snaps to notch up an impressive heat total of 18.30.
Narrabeen’s Kobi Clements threw down an exciting array of bottom-turn, top-turn combos to snatch victory in the Under-10 Boys final. Jan Juc’s Patrick Hughes put up an impressive fight, but ultimately had to settle for second place.
The Under-12 Girls final saw Charli Hurst, Gabi Spake, Mia Colella and Brodi Cook going hell-for-leather in the punchy lefthanders with all surfers locking in respectable scores. However, Windang’s Charli Hurst proved to be too good for her opposition and successfully took out the highly contended division.
Finn Hill’s highly technical forehand carves allowed him to claim victory in the Under-12 Boys final. The Avoca natural-footer locked in a heat total of 14.24 to claim the win ahead of Chae Conti, Jamie Thompson and Axel Rosecurotta who finished in second, third and fourth respectively.
The exciting finals action continued right through to the Under-14 Girls final with Bodhi Leigh-Jones, Tessa Berkeley, Madison Poole and Chelsea Green all destroying the punchy lefthanders. However, Avalon’s Bodhi Leigh-Jones’ ability to link together a combination of backhand snaps allowed her to take the win with a heat total of 16.40.
Bateau Bay natural-footer Kurtis Vaughan joined his brother Hughie on the winner’s list, when he managed to successfully pull off multiple frontside snaps and carves to take the win in the blue-ribbon Under-14 Boys final. Max McGuigan, Nathan Rohr and Jay Brown took out second, third and fourth respectively.
On land competitors and spectators had the opportunity to win Wahu prizes in beach games like: Crumbed Cutlet challenges, Looney Legs and Cricket Catches.
As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under-14 Boys’ and Girls’ divisions received an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
