Josh Johnson-Baxter and Georgia Fish claim opening round
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 16 January, 2016 - Gunnamatta - Josh Johnson-Baxter (Ocean Grove) and Georgia Fish (Flinders) have claimed the opening round of the TOLL Victorian Open Series presented by HIF today.
In challenging 3-4ft surf, the 27-year-old Johnson-Baxter won his first open state round mixing progressive and power manoeuvres throughout the day.
“I’m just really stoked. It has taken a fair few years to get a win in an open state round, but I finally made it” said Johnson-Baxter. “It was a good day. Everyone was ripping, it was really hard to get through most heats.”
The Open Men’s final was one of the most exciting finals in recent history with multiple excellent scoring rides throughout the final. Placing in second was Carl Wright (Phillip Island) who fell only .4 of a point short of taking the win.
Local surfer Caiden Fowler (Tuerong) placed in third with last years Open Men’s champion Steve Noble (Cape Paterson) in fourth. The Open Women’s division saw World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series surfer Georgia Fish (Flinders) dominate throughout the day.
“The conditions were fun but a little testing. It was the perfect way to build some confidence and focus going into my year of competing on the WSL QS” said Fish.
Placing in second was Jemima Hutchins (Barwon Heads) with Rebecca Morgan (Jan Juc) and Ella Sweeney (Jan Juc) in third and fourth.
