Victory at sea conditions kick off Ocean Grove grom comp

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 November, 2013 - Ocean Grove, Victoria -The opening day of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp in Ocean Grove was greeted with victory at sea conditions with strong onshore winds and a large swell at the popular beach break.

In the premier Under 14’s division, Tully Wylie (Jan Juc) made the most of the marginal conditions to post a winning combination of 12.17 (out of a possible 20). Wylie carved his way to the win by finding some running lefts amongst the chop at “Main Beach”.

Other winners in the first round were Xavier Huxtable (Jan Juc), Josh Van Niekerk (Jan Juc) and Noah Stocca (Aireys Inlet). Round 2 of the Under 14 boys was also completed leaving Xavier Huxtable, Tully Wylie, Josh Van Niekerk and Codie Jeffery in the final to be run tomorrow.

Jessie Van Niekerk (Jan Juc) was the standout of the Under 14 Girls posting the highest two wave total of the round with 12.33 (out of a possible 20). Van Niekerk opened her account in the heat with a 7.33 and quickly backed it up with a 5.00 securing her the top spot.

Other winners included India Robinson (Jan Juc), Shayla Patterson (San Remo) and Isabell Cook (Torquay). Under 12 Boys and Girls, Under 10 Boys and the Under 8 Mixed Parent Assist divisions were also run throughout the day.

The under 12 Boys Final will consist of Xavier Huxtable, Cole Fox (Jan Juc), James Hughes (Jan Juc) and Spencer Kay (Torquay) The highest scoring wave of the day went to Jan Juc sensation Xavier Huxtable who went mental to score a 9.00 (out of a possible 10). This gave him a two-wave total of 17.17, also the highest of the day.
