Volcom Stone's Lavafish rocks Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 February, 2009 : - - Last Week End was the last stop of the European Totally Crustaceous Tour 08-09, which took place in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. As usual, lot of people came from the surrounding Islands here to add to the high level of surfing mixed with tasty bocadillos and the usual strange people passing on the beachfront walkway either coming home or on their way to the Carnival which was taking place on the same weekend around the city.

Not even the freezing cold onshore wind could dampen the excited gromets who turned up early watching us set up and getting everything ready to get the day started on the right track. The contest started with the grom division in the three-foot waves with a strong north wind, which didn’t help the contestants nor the spectators.

After the some solid swells from the weeks before on the Canarian coast the sand banks was quite good at Cicer beach and remained rippable despite the onshore conditions. Luca Diaz fresh from his win in Lanzarote the weekend before went all the way to the final with confidence and finished up in fourth place a good performance for the super hero « SSsurfer contra Bugeros y Parralas ».

Sandro Artiles took the 3rd place finding a couple of good waves to rip and Carlos Mellan finished 2nd with some good turns and pushing it a little bit more. Tenerife champ Ivan Gonzalez took the win again surfing really solid all day long.

A lot of girls entered the contest and we had to run 3 rounds of this division, local ripper Aida lost in the semis and couldn’t make it to the final and in the end it was Cintia Borges taking the win, comboing everyone in the final and making it her 3rd consecutive Lavafish domination (Tenerife-Lanzarote-Gran Canaria), will be good to see her at the champs in Anglet!

The battle was really tough in the junior’s category with an explosive final, and with the surf conditions better than the other finals with the right tide on the peak. Javier Ascanio qualified to the European champs rounding out the final in 4th place, Niko Kali who was surfing good all day long couldn’t push pass 3rd spot.

Manuel Sanchez took the 2nd place with his pirate face (that was this year’s carnival theme); we hope to see his enthusiasm in Anglet for the champs (he was in all the photos on the podium from last years Champs). Jose Roman who was in great form found all the good waves to put him in the first place.

In the Open division, Christian Jimenez took the win explosive surfing on both the rights and on the rare long double up lefts in front of local legend Felix Ortega who was the stand out all day and won all his heats on his way to the final, he was rewarded for a nice front side reverse with 50€ for Electric’s Gooeyest move of the day.

David Arbew and Antonio Marc were throwing some solid turns, moving sometimes more water than the onshore waves themselves but couldn’t catch the others finishing respectively in the 3rd and 4th spot getting their qualification for the Euro VQS final in Anglet.

The day ended pretty late with a giveaway shower and a lot of smiles everywhere, that was the last stop of the 08-09 tour, see you all on the 25 and 26 of April in Anglet for the good ol’ European VQS Champs.

A big thank to everyone that helped us running this comp, the judges, Tambo (multitask cop), Timo for the pics, the Ayutamiento of Las Palmas, Chicho and his surf school, Electric for prizes, and of course everyone that show up that day braving the wind!
