Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 July, 2008 : - - Phyllis ODonell was Australias first surfing world champion ever, male or female. and is hailed as one of the top women surfers of all time. Her achievements, in 60s and '70s at a time when women were just breaking into the traditionally all-male sport, are a huge credit to her.
Although diminutive, her aggressive style ensured an illustrious career. Born and raised in Sydney, Phyllis began surfing at age 23 when the family moved to Banora Point on the Tweed Coast. She was a member of the Kirra Boardriders Club and rode the boards of local shaper Joe Larkin.
Her pioneering achievements were recognised in 1995 when she was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame at the Surfworld Museum in Torquay. During her reign as queen of the waves, Phyllis was honoured with numerous trophies of all description. Now, four of these gleaming icons are being offered for sale as The Phyllis O'Donell Trophy Collection.
This truly unique set represents and documents professional surfing from its humble beginning. The collection has immense historical significance, and each of the four (4) trophies have been painstakingly restored to their original lustre.
"I have bought and sold numerous trophies over the years, but never have I handled a collection with such pedigree. They embody the true spirit of the period when professional surfing came of age, and as such must surely rank as surfing's most collectable silverware," said Von Weirdos founder Darryl Miller.
