Honorees will be presented SUP Awards on October 2
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 5 August, 2014 - Voting for the fourth annual SUP Awards has begun at SUPAwards.com. SUP magazine created the SUP Awards as standup paddling’s highest honor, recognizing the absolute best that the sport has to offer.
The SUP magazine editorial staff tediously studied the nominees and collected input and nominations from readers and fans over the first half of the year. Now it’s up to you—paddlers from around the world—to rank standup’s top three male and female paddlers, pick the Movie of the Year, Top Expedition and Top Philanthropic Effort. SUP magazine will also present the Lifetime Achievement Award, given to a legend that has changed the face of the sport forever. Honorees will be presented at the SUP Awards show, Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the historic Casino San Clemente in San Clemente, Calif.
"The SUP Awards has taken on a life of its own,” says SUP magazine Editor-In-Chief Joe Carberry. “It’s grown into its own brand and we’re really humbled by it all. Especially by the fact that we’re able to really honor the best paddling athletes in the world. It fits well into our overall ethos of really showing the culture of standup paddling to the world.”
Last year, in a hotly contested vote, Annabel Anderson took home her first Female Paddler of the Year Award followed closely by Brazilian champ Nicole Pacelli and perennial contender Candice Appleby. On the men’s side, reigning BOP and three-time Standup World Tour champion Kai Lenny took home Male Paddler of the Year honors, with fellow Maui boys Slater Trout and recent Molokai 2 Oahu record-setter Connor Baxter coming in second and third, respectively.
The beautiful conservation film “Stand” won Movie of the Year while Justin Riney won Expedition of the Year for Expedition Florida 500, his year-long journey around Florida. SEA Paddle NYC won Top Philanthropic Effort and to cap the night off, the incomparable Laird Hamilton was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award.
