WA's top bodyboarders go head to head at Scarborough
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 July, 2014 - Trigg Beach (WA/AUS) (Wednesday 2nd July 2014), The 2014 SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles presented by Good Earth will culminate this weekend at Scarborough Beach, with the third and final event of the series set to crown state champions across nine separate divisions.
WA’s best bodyboarders from as far north as Gerladton and as far south as Albany will converge on the Perth metropolitan beaches for their last chance to qualify for the upcoming Wahu Australian Bodyboard Titles to be held from the 14th to the 18th of August in Coffs Harbour, NSW.
Scarborough has provided epic competition waves for WA's best bodyboarders in the past, with the location playing hosting to multiple state, specialty and pro tour events since the early 1990's.
The SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles have developed into one of the most exciting event series on the Surfing WA events calendar, attracting international profile athletes such as Lewy Finnegan (Ocean Reef), George Humphreys (Mandurah), Davis Blackwell and Ben Veitch (Margaret River) to compete whilst at home in Western Australia.
After the starting at Yallingup back in March, the series then travelled to Mandurah last month, with the final event at Scarborough set to mirror the conditions competitors can expect to tackle at Coffs Harbour.
"Punchy beach-break waves are what we've come to expect, so this weekend will provide a great warm up for those chasing State Team positions," said Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks. "Im confident that today's wild weather will stir up the banks along the metro beaches just in time for the weekend."
Local hopes this weekend include; Blake Gerrard (Mindarie), Nathan Hutchins (Ocean Reef) and Dan Donovan (Scarborough).
While top rated regional competitors; Noah Symmans (Albany), Rory Nelson (Geraldton), Lachie Breakey (Dunsborough) and Margaret River trio, Kyle Spence, Lee Wilson and Finn Haslau will be the ones to watch when competition gets underway at Scarborough Beach from 7:40am Saturday morning.
