Repeated sightings of bronze whaler sharks in the area cause concern

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 August, 2016 - The Western Australia School Surfing Titles have been cancelled after a large number of shark sightings were reported. Several people reported seeing bronze whaler sharks in the area between Trigg and Hillarys has forced officials keep competitors out of the water.

28 high schools from across Western Australia are represented at the event with more than 100 surfers participating. In total there were 61 shark sightings from early June until now which has prompted local authorities to set baited drum lines.

The Department of Fisheries set the lines between Bennion Beach near Trigg  on Thursday. Surfing Western Australia chief executive Mark Lane told Perth Now that it was the first time in 25 years a major WA surfing event had to be cancelled.
