Second Round of WA State Champs readies for Flat Rocks

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 22 May, 2014 - Round 2 of the HIF Prom Am Series presented by SunSmart kicks off this weekend at Flat Rocks, Geraldton where competitors from across the state will be greeted by large swell for the second of three rounds that ultimately decide the WA State Champions and WA State Team.

Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks said competitors will have their work cut out for them with the forecast pointing towards potentially tricky conditions.

"The swell and winds will be up over the weekend providing some challenging surf for our competitors. Our prime event location, Flat Rocks just south of Geraldton is very reliable across a variety of conditions and the fact it's a reef break will handle the swell better than any beach break in the area."

Looking to consolidate their points in the race for State Champion are current Men’s and Women’s ratings leaders Shaun Howe (Kalbarri) and Bailee Hastie (Margaret River) who secured wildcard positions into the trials of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour (WCT) Margaret River Pro after their HIF Prom Am Series Round 1 wins earlier in the year.

Tom Innes (Margaret River) and Imogen Caldwell (Carnarvon) are in close second on the ratings for the Open Men and Open Women’s divisions and will be aiming to go one better in this round.

Former ASP WCT competitor Jake Paterson (Yallingup) is looking to defend three state titles, while competing in a fourth division for the first time this year.  Currently sitting in fifth for the Opens, second in the Single Fin and O’35’s and first in the O’40’s, Paterson will be on a mission to win this weekend across all divisions.

“Flat Rocks is a really fun wave, I don’t get the chance to get up there very often so I’m looking forward to it.  I can’t make it to Rottnest for the final round in July so every heat counts for me at this event, hopefully I can get enough points to keep me in the race.”

Other competitors who are sure to keep the ratings leaders on their toes are Geraldton locals Max and Brady Marsden and James Fleming, who currently sits in third on both the Open Men’s and Single Fin ratings.  Claire Bevilacqua (Yallingup) and Denver Young (Cottesloe) will be pushing the standard in the Open Women’s division.

Competition will kick off from approximately 8am Saturday with finals concluding on Sunday.
