Grommets put on solid performances for Day One

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 December, 2014 - Wanda Beach, Cronulla - The final Wahu Surfer Groms Comp for 2014 kicked off today in punchy two-foot waves between Wanda and Elouera Beach on Cronulla’s northern stretch. Over 100 surfers got stuck into the action as they fought to earn their positions in tomorrow’s final rounds.

Under-14 Boys surfer Jackson Roberts (Bateau Bay) came out of the blocks hard and fast in his round two heat, posting a 5.83 wave score (out of a possible ten points) for one single backhand snap in the pocket, as well as a 7.0 wave score for a solid combination of flowing forehand turns. Jackson managed to take home wins in round one and round two alongside Olly Bolton (Copacabana) and Tye Koolis (Maroubra) who also achieved the same feat.

Local surfer and recent Surf Dive N Ski Australian Junior Titles competitor Jay Brown (Lilli Pilli) started the event in great form taking the highest heat total of the morning, posting a 15.0 total (out of a possible 20 points) to win his round one heat. Jay managed to find the running lefts and performed a variety of fluent turns, which perfectly fit the judging criteria.

Northern Beaches sisters Bodhi and Cedar Leigh-Jones (Avalon) showed they were potential threats in the Under-14 Girls with both surfers managing to lock in impressive wins. Over the course of the 2014/2015 Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series so far, Bodhi has won the Under-14 Girls at Kiama and Sydney’s Northern Beaches, while Cedar has taken a win and a runner-up finish in the Under-12 Girls. Both sisters will surf again tomorrow.

Other Under-14 Girls standouts included fellow Northern Beaches sisters Nica and Ines Frayne (Mona Vale), Madison Poole (Lambton) and Tru Starling (Collaroy).

In the Under-12 Girls and Boys division, Gabi Spake (Collaroy) and Logan Steinwede (Wagstaffe) sent a warning shot to their fellow competitors, both posting a range of decent scores and cementing their position in tomorrow’s blue ribbon rounds.

The main base for event six of the Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series is North Cronulla Beach with backup locations of Wanda, Elouera and Sandshoes. All competitors are advised to ring the event hotline (0458 247 212) by 6.45am on the days of competition to confirm location and running order.

Regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Wahu Surfer Groms Comp series caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. The Under 8 will be a mixed division with parent assists, while competition will be held in both boys and girls in the Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14 divisions.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys' and girls' divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Wahu Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.

It just isn't all about the action in the water at the Wahu Surfer Groms Comps with plenty of beach games to keep everyone entertained, while each entrant will also receive a Wahu Surfer Groms Comps t-shirt plus a Wahu beach product.

A qualified chef will also be firing up the Everdure barbie making sure the hordes of grommets and staff don't go hungry with the Everdure Sausage Sizzle feeding the crew on both days of competition at all 10 events.
