Young Aussie girls learn water safety from role models
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 25 November, 2013 - Ocean Grove, Victoria -- The first stop of the Play it Safe by the Water Surfing for Girls Presented by Ghanda kicked off today at Ocean Grove Main Beach with strong winds and a messy swell on offer.
Over 40 girls from around the region gathered to get in the water with former world tour competitor Bec Woods (NSW) and local Victorians Jess Laing and India Payne. The program uses positive female role models and professional surf coaches to pass on skills and knowledge to the next generation of female surfers.
Each participant received a water safety lesson which includes a basic board rescue to help prepare them for summer. They also receive a surf lesson and the chance to surf with Woods, Laing and Payne.
First Love Star and lead coach Jess Laing was impressed with the enthusiasm of the girls on such a miserable day. “They we so excited to get out in the water even though it was freezing cold!”
“Its great to be going around the state and seeing all of the girls so pumped to go surfing.” Brandy Butcher walked away from the day with a brand new pair of Dragon sunglasses whilst Steph Leitch was awarded with a Ghanda prize pack.
Every participant received a prize pack and Ghanda t-shirt for the day. The program now heads to Portland in the far west of the sate on Tuesday. The Play it Safe by the Water Surfing for Girls is Presented by Ghanda and Supported by Dragon, Team Up, Cancer Council Sunscreen and Be the Influence.
