Field after slot in up-coming Drug Aware Margaret River Pro

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 19 February, 2014 - The opening round of the Health Insurance Fund of Australia (HIF) WA Pro Am Series presented by SunSmart kicks off in the South-West this weekend with a solid lineup of WA’s best surfers keen to earn a spot into the trials of the up-coming Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.

With the forecast looking good, WA’s best will make their way from across the state from as far north as Carnarvon to as far south as Denmark to compete in the first of three rounds that ultimately decide the WA State Champions and WA State Team.

The impressive lineup of surfers sees some of the state’s best juniors move up into the Pro-Junior U21 and Open divisions, with the Open Men’s division stacked with surfers vying for one coveted spot into the trials of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour (WCT) Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.

Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks emphasised the importance of this opening round, “The first event of the HIF Pro Am series is so important as it acts as a ‘trials for the trials’ for the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. “We’ve got a really positive forecast with some of the state’s best surfers lining up for this opportunity, so it’s shaping up to be a massive event.”

Top contenders in the Open Men’s division include reigning champion Jake Paterson (Yallingup), young-gun Jacob Willcox (Margaret River), World Qualifying Series competitors Jerome Forrest (Margaret River) and Luke Campbell (Trigg), along with Brett Hardy (Margaret River), Tom Innes (Margaret River), Shaun Green (Margaret River), Shaun Howe (Kalbarri) and Max Marsden (Geraldton).

Jerome Forrest, who has recently returned to the West after competing in the first Australian leg of the WQS on the east coast is looking forward to surfing on home turf. “I’ve just flown back from Newcastle with Jacob [Willcox] and after a month on the road surfing some pretty average conditions we’re really excited to be back home in the south-west with some great waves.

“It looks like there will be some fun waves this weekend and all the boys are competing so it should make for a great final.”

The Pro Junior Series is looking strong with reigning champion Josh Burke who will also be contesting the Open division, Kael Walsh (Yallingup), Josh Cattlin (Yallingup), Nick Muntz (Trigg), Jack Macaulay (Gracetown), Voltaire Takahashi (Margaret River), Shaun Green (Margaret River), Jed Mattinson (Margaret River) and Moses Le Grice (City Beach).

In the Open Women’s division, current U16 National Champion Emi Campbell (Denmark) will be up against some stiff competition from the Durant sisters, Alex and Marnie (Carnarvon), Ella Massie and Bailee Hastie (Margaret River) and Imogen Caldwell (Carnarvon).

Cash and prizes will be up for grabs in each of the divisions, as well as the awarding of the HIF Wave of the Weekend.

The HIF Pro Am Series is a three round series that travels to Margaret River, Geraldton and Rottnest Island and is proudly supported by the Health Insurance Fund of Australia (HIF), SunSmart, Otis Eyewear, Creatures of Leisure, West Coast Suspension, Be the Influence and 3D Fins.
