All eyes on Mandurah for second stop of the SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 29 May, 2014 - Trigg Beach - Some of Australia's most exciting bodyboarders are set to line up in Mandurah this weekend for the second event of the 2014 SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles presented by Good Earth Surf. After an exciting series opener in Yallingup back in March, WA’s best riders have had ample opportunity to fine tune their skills in hope of travelling to Coffs Harbour, NSW in August for the National Bodyboard Titles.
Western Australia is renowned for producing world-class bodyboarders including Chad Jackson (Dunsborough), Joe Jordanoff (Dunsborough), Brad Hughes (Trigg), and Ryan Hardy (Margaret River), who have all carved out international careers after competing in these same events as juniors. This traditional set to continue over the weekend, as an electrifying group of fresh young talent will converge on Mandurah for what is set to be an action packed weekend of high performance bodyboarding.
Mandurah has recently become a mecca for many bodyboarders with the Peel region just one hour south of Perth, providing some of the most consistent and contestable waves in the whole metropolitan area. Event officials and competitors alike looking forward to utilising the variety of locations on offer in the area.
"For a long time bodyboarding has been seen as the little brother of surfing, but to have some of the big names of the sport involved this weekend is really cool," said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. "The weekend will be a true celebration bodyboarding with plenty of action expected both in and out of the water."
In an exciting addition, the event will incorporate the third stop on the Australian Bodyboard Association (ABA) Pro Tour, the Good Earth Mandurah Pro. A small but but star-studded field of East Coast competitors are set to make their way to the West Australia coastline, including the current ratings leaders Lachlan Cramsie (QLD) & Joe Clark (QLD).
Sitting in fourth place on the national ratings is local rider and 2013 Open Men's State Champion Jake Metcalfe (City Beach) who is looking forward to his home court advantage. “Finally I can drive to the contest instead of flying," said Metcalfe. "I've had some good results in Mandurah over the years so I'm really feeling confident."
Metcalfe will be joined by international superstar Lewy Finnegan (Ocean Reef), Ben Veitch (Margaret River) and Mandurah high-flyers George Humphreys and Davis Blackwell who are set make the most of their local breaks across the two day event.
One of the highest profile riders in the world, Ryan Hardy (Margaret River) will also be heading to Mandurah this weekend not as a competitor, but as a coach. Hardy will be running a series of two hour clinics throughout the weekend to provide his expertise to the new generation of WA bodyboarders.
"After travelling around the world over the past 15 years as a professional bodyboarder, I'm motivated to pass on the skills and knowledge to the youngsters coming through the ranks," said Hardy. "My clinics are designed to be fun, highly interactive, guaranteed to improve your bodyboarding."
After a good start to autumn with plenty of swell and light winds, the outlook for this weekend is looking positive with competition kicking off on Saturday at Pyramids Beach from 8am with finals running from midday Sunday.
