New novel 'The Swell' centers around surfing
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 7 November, 2014 - Writer, filmmaker and busy mum Lauren Davies has been enjoying a rising tide of success of late and her latest novel is about to make another splash. The Swell promises readers a glamorous journey as it introduces them to the world of surfing.
It’s a world that 41-year-old Lauren knows plenty about. Married to professional surfer Gabe Davies, she surfs too and the couple, who live in Northumberland with nine-month-old son Bo Reef, spend a lot of time on the waves in Tynemouth.
Lauren has accompanied her husband, a four-time British surfing champion, to many exotic locations and her newly-published romantic drama, set against the backdrop of the world surf tour, promises escapism and excitement in exotic locations such as Tahiti and Indonesia but it also reveals the dangers and realities of a hugely competitive sport.
“When I’ve told people my husband is a professional surfer, they don’t quite understand or realise how often they’re putting their lives at risk,” says Lauren. Gabe has surfed some of the biggest waves in the world and when you’re competing, it’s not as if you have a chance to change your mind if the conditions don’t suit: you have to go.
