WindanSea recognized as the first truly international surf club in the world
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 17 January, 2017 - Get ready for one of the biggest legendary Boardriding Club reunions ever in the New Year celebrating the WindanSea Surf Club at Currumbin RSL on Thursday 2nd March, 2017.
Established in 1962 at San Diego, California with the name taken from the local reefbreak, Windansea. Considered to be the greatest Club in its day, membership was invitational and the bar was set high for the talent level.
WindanSea was the first truly International Club in the World with branches formed in Mexico, Tahiti, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia.
In 1963, three Bondi Surfers, Max Bowman, Dennis Lindsay and Dave Spencer travelled to California for a surfing trip to Mexico. The American WindanSea asked the Bondi Boys to start an Australian branch and when they returned to Bondi, Max Bowman was elected President in 1964. Like the Pied Piper, Max recruited some of Australia’ best surfers from Bondi, Cronulla, Wollongong, South Coast, Avalon, Central Coast, Gold Coast to Noosa.
Gold Coast asserted control from 1970 with a clubhouse in Surfers Paradise behind Paula Stafford’s bikini shop in Cavill Avenue where Melba’s nightclub stands today.
By the mid-seventies the greatest Club in the World had faded out, that is apart from the original base at San Diego and the sole surviving Australian Club at Caloundra that continues to grow in strength with an abundance of talent.
So when former Junior Pres of Bondi WindanSea Rick Teodo called me for my reaction to a one-off, never to be repeated reunion, I overwhelming agreed, saying, “Let’s do it!"
The WindanSea 2017 Reunion will take place on Thursday 2nd March from 6.30pm in the upstairs Sound Lounge of the Currumbin RSL.
