Bowen goes Big at the Beach Burrito NSW Open State Titles presented by Bio Engineered
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 March, 2012 : - - Beach Burrito NSW Open State Titles Presented by BioEngineered opened with tough conditions, as NSW best surfers took on the four foot peaks at The Alley Cronulla, vying for the state title and qualifying for the Australian Surf Festival 2012.
Big names and Big Surfing was the order of the day as Ex-CT surfers Blake Thornton (Maroubra) and Drew Courtney (Ulladulla) showcased world class surfing, along with Dean Bowen (Gerroa) and Nick Squires (Wollongong) impressing judges in the tricky conditions. There was a bit of swell that came through but it was hard to find the good waves, you just had to pick well, said Bowen who resides on the south coast of NSW.
The powerful and aggressive surfing Bowen is known for around the world is what set him apart today, along with Nick Squires who nailed an impressive 16.5 combined heat total, which is what surfers will be looking for to gain entry to Newcastle Surfest.
The wildcard entry to Newcastle Surfest is a big attraction to all the competitors, it really helps, said Bowen who delivered a huge back-hand Reo to take the lead. The contest has more buzz around it this year, splitting the opens and the surfmasters has definitely made it more exciting. Its a bigger and harder contest which is what we want and the raise in prize money has attracted more surfers, said Bowen.
The local contingent made a huge impression with Joey Sear, Dylan Hayllar, Dane Durbin, Joel Etherington and one of the youngest competitors of competition - Shane Campbell at just 16 years of age making it through against the states best male surfers. I knew a lot of tough names were going in it and I had to take it heat by heat, the older guys Ive never surfed against were ripping, said Campbell.
It was great to have all the locals cheering me on, I think I was lucky with the best conditions of the day - if you found the right ones you get the good scores, said Campbell who surfed in his maiden state title today at Cronulla. Creating a prestigious event on the beaches of Cronulla has definitely paid off, with Ex CT surfers Blake Thornton and Drew Courtney both winning their heats, Ty Watsons forehand Carves and Chris Salisburys 8.5 ride also placed them first, moving them through to tomorrows round 2.
The competition has been great for spectators looking for powerful and aggressive action after a busy month on the surfing schedule in Australia. Current Australian Womens champion Brittani Nicol (Byron Bay) won the first heat of the womens contingent along with Rachel Campbell (Stanwell Park), Jessica Grimwood (Bateau Bay) and Philippa Anderson (Merewether).
Tomorrow will see the mens open with round 2 and the womens semi finalists will be decided by lunchtime. The BioEngineered girls will be back giving out samples so make sure you pop into their tent to see whats on offer. All competitors will be treated to a party at Beach Burrito Cronulla where Burritos and Beer will be on offer, stop in and chat to competitors and grab a spicy burrito from the crew.
The Cronulla region is home to a number of great beach break options that work in a variety of conditions. The prime location for the event will be 'The Alley' at North Cronulla Beach however the event is mobile utilising the entire Cronulla strip of beaches. Competition will commence each day at 7:45am with the call for the day's schedule and location confirmed via the event hotline: 0458 247 212 by 6:45am.
