Baker Leads but Challenges Loom Large
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 30 January, 2014 - Grant "Twiggy" Baker's win at the Body Glove Mavericks Invitational has pushed him into an ideal position to win this season’s Xpreshon Big Wave World Title.
Baker has back-to-back wins on the 6 event Xpreshon Big Wave World Tour and leads the rankings on 2000 points. That's almost double the points of Ken "Skindog" Collins (USA/SantaCruz) on 1059 points with fellow Santa Cruz charger Nic Lamb in third position on 905 and Hawaii’s Shane Dorian 4th on 810 points.
While Baker is well positioned to win the prestigious Xpreshon Big Wave World Title he is by no means a certainty to win. The title race is wide open and Baker commented on his position today - "For me, I hope both contests go off! I have a good lead but if "Skinny" (Ken Collins) wins one or I do badly, straight away the title race is close. I need to remain very focused right now."
Ken Collins in second position on the rankings is optimistic. "I don't think I've tapped into my inner fire yet - When you're on fire it's easy to get injured or burnt out. I'm actually hoping to take it to the next level for the final two events of the season. The bigger boards I've been riding are perfect for clean open ocean big waves and I'm especially looking forward to the Seatka Pro Oregon at Nelscott Reef."
Xpreshon co-founder Jason Webb commented on the tour saying "Xpreshon was stoked to be a part of this years Mavericks event, which was also the 2nd stop on the Xpreshon Big Wave World Tour. Twiggy, Skindog, Shane and all the surfers really committed themselves to every wave and proved once again that big wave surfing is one of the most exciting sports to watch on the planet.
/'We cant wait for the remaining 2 events at Oregon and Todos Santos, they are going to be awesome. We are proud to be the key sponsor of the Xpreshon Big Wave World Tour and delivering the best in action sports entertainment on your Windows 8 PC and Xbox."
Two events remain on the radar, The Seatka Pro - Oregon and Dive N' Surf @ Todos Santos and then there's the wave coefficient factor which can see an event awarded more than the base 1000 winning points if the waves exceed 36,40,40 or the 50 feet range.
The surfing world is watching with interest. An incredible 1.3 million unique visitors watched the Body Glove Mavericks Invitational last week.
