Australian Jessi Miley-Dyer wins the Oakley Rio Surf Pro International      > Portugues embaixo

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 October, 2009 : - -  Rio De Janeiro -- In an all Australian final at Leblon, Jessi Miley-Dyer won the Rio Surf Pro International pres. by Oakley defeating 17-year-old Laura Enever. With the result in the last WQS event of the year, Jessi won 4.000 dollars and also finished the year in second place with the Hawaiian Coco Ho winning the 2009 ASP Women’s WQS title.

Jessi started the heat with a good right (6 points out a possible of 10), than Enever stayed in the outside waiting for the set, without priority Jessi started to get many waves. Enever dropped a got one to receive 4.17 from judges, and with 10 minutes remaining, Jessi founded a great right and with three big turns (8.33 points) left Enever needing a combination of two waves to win the final.

Enever only got another wave (2.67 points) and with 6.84 points (out a possible of 20), Enever finished in second while Jessi with 14.33 points assured the title of the Rio Surf Pro International pres. by Oakley in good three-to-four foot (1-1.5 metre) waves at Leblon.

"I'm very happy because I didin’t won a contest since a very long time. My last time was in Peru, so I think I have lucky here in South America" said Jessi Miley-Dyer. "I'm not going well in the World Tour this year, so I needed to run the WQS to confirm my position to 2010. So I knew I needed a good result here in Brazil. It was a difficult week, no waves, them we had big waves for two days in a roll, so It was nice, so now I just want to celebrate".

Brazil's best placed in the WQS in 2009 was Bruna Schmitz in eighth place, Schmitz still in the list for ASP Dream Tour in 2010. But she has to wait the end of the season to celebrate her classification. This because the champion Coco Ho, the fourth placed Paige Hareb of New Zealand and fifth Rebecca Woods from Australia still in the top ten in the World Tour.

In the same situation is the surfer from South Africa, Nikita Robb, current in 9th position. Also still classified the French Lee Ann Curren, the champion of Rio Surf Pro International pres. by Oakley Jessi Miley-Dyer (AUS), Carissa Moore (HAW) and Claire Bevilacqua (AUS).

In the earlier heat, Australian Laura Enever send back home the French Lee Ann Curren, Tom Curren’s daughter, who was already confirmed in the ASP Women's Tour when she defeated the New Zealand Airin Mason in the quarter-finals. Even with a victory at Rio Surf Pro International pres. by Oakley, Enever would not be abble to reach the top 6 of WQS Ranking.

"I'm very happy with my second place. I was very tired in the final, this was my third heat and the waves conditions are really hard. In the end, I got almost no waves and Jessi was surfing strong all day, then it would be difficult to win the contest over she. Now I just want a break, relax in this beatiful city and then prepare myself to Hawaii" said Enever, who took 2.000 dollars and moved from 31th to 22 position in the ranking.

In third place in the event finished Lee Ann Curren and the Hawaiian Bethany Hamilton, who scored the best wave of the event with 9.33 points. “Yeah was a good result for me. I'm happy in general, but I really wanted to make the final here to have chances to classify to the World Tour next year, but I'm glad, I had a good year and next year I will go with everything. I liked it here a lot, this is a wonderful city and the waves here was really good for competition” said Hamilton.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 October, 2009 : - - Uma decisão australiana fechou o WQS Feminino de 2009 no canto do Leblon, que foi palco da categoria feminina do Oakley apresenta Rio Surf Pro International, enquanto a masculina continuou na Praia do Arpoador. A mais experiente Jessi Miley-Dyer conquistou o primeiro título na capital carioca, derrotando Laura Enever na final com uma larga vantagem de 14,33 x 6,84 pontos. Com a vitória, Jessi terminou em segundo lugar no ranking, atrás da nova campeã mundial do WQS, a havaiana Coco Ho. Já o campeão do masculino será conhecido neste domingo, por volta das 13 horas no Arpoador.

“Estou muito feliz, pois fazia muito tempo que eu não vencia um evento. Acho que a última vez foi no Peru, então estou amarradona”, vibrou Jessi Miley-Dyer. “Não estou indo bem no WCT este ano, então busquei o WQS para confirmar minha vaga e sabia que precisava de um bom resultado aqui no Brasil. Foi uma semana difícil, sem ondas, mas elas subiram e o campeonato rolou em ondas grandes nestes dois dias, do jeito que eu gosto, então agora só quero comemorar”, completou a australiana.

A brasileira mais bem colocada no WQS 2009 foi a paranaense Bruna Schmitz em oitavo lugar, sendo no momento a penúltima na lista das seis indicadas para a elite do ASP Women’s Tour. Só que Bruninha precisa aguardar o encerramento da temporada para poder comemorar a classificação pela divisão de acesso do Circuito Mundial. Isso porque ela depende que duas das três surfistas que ficaram acima dela, a campeã Coco Ho, a quarta colocada Paige Hareb da Nova Zelândia e a quinta Rebecca Woods, terminem entre as dez primeiras do ASP Tour 2009 que são mantidas no grupo das top-16.

Na mesma situação ficou a sul-africana Nikita Robb, que acabou em nono no ranking final do WQS e fecha o G-6 com o resultado do Oakley apresenta Rio Surf Pro International. É a primeira vez na história que o WQS não acaba no Havaí e sim no Brasil. Além de Bruna Schmitz, entraram na lista das seis a francesa Lee Ann Curren e a sul-africana Nikita Robb, enquanto a americana Sage Erickson, a australiana Amee Donohoe e a argentina Ornella Pellizzari, que ficou dentro da zona de classificação durante todo o ano, perderam suas vagas na última etapa da temporada. Toda a competição feminina rolou na sexta-feira e no sábado na estrutura alternativa montada no pontão do Leblon.

O sábado decisivo começou com a terceira fase e foi nela que parou Bruna Schmitz, eliminada por Paige Hareb da Nova Zelândia e Bethany Hamilton, havaiana que perdeu um braço num ataque de tubarão anos atrás. Ela poderia até ultrapassar a paranaense no WQS se chegasse na final do Oakley / Rio Surf Pro International. Mas, ela parou na semifinal, não achando as ondas no confronto com a campeã Jessi Miley-Dyer. “Foi um bom resultado, mas queria muito ter ido a final, pois assim eu teria chances de entrar no WCT. Mas estou contente pelo bom ano que eu tive e no ano que vem estarei aí tentando de novo”, prometeu Bethany Hamilton, que repetiu o 14.o lugar no ranking final de 2008.

Na disputa anterior, Laura Enever despachou a francesa Lee Ann Curren, mas a filha do mito Tom Curren já tinha confirmado sua classificação para a elite do ASP Women´s Tour quando derrotou a neozelandesa Airini Mason nas quartas-de-final. Mesmo que vencesse o campeonato, Laura Enever não conseguiria ingressar no G-6 do WQS Feminino. Mas, a jovem australiana gostou do resultado.

“Estou feliz pelo segundo lugar também. Eu estava muito cansada na final, era a terceira bateria que eu disputava hoje e as condições do mar estão difíceis. Na final quase não peguei ondas e a Jessi vinha surfando forte o dia inteiro, então seria difícil mesmo ganhar dela. Agora só quero descansar um pouco, aproveitar essa cidade linda para relaxar e depois me preparar pro Havaí”, contou Laura Enever, que levou 2.000 dólares de prêmio pelo vice-campeonato no Oakley / Rio Surf Pro International, com a australiana subindo da 31.a para a 22.a posição no ranking final do WQS 2009.

Na grande final, Jessi Miley-Dyer não deu qualquer chance para Laura Enever. Ela surfou a primeira onda boa da bateria que valeu nota 6 e depois pegou uma melhor ainda para arrancar um 8,33 dos juízes, sacramentando uma vitória tranqüila por 16,33 x 6,84 pontos. Pelo título, Jessi Miley-Dyer faturou o prêmio máximo de 4.000 dólares e confirmou de vez o seu nome na elite por mais um ano, já que neste ela não está tendo um bom desempenho e divide a última posição com Layne Beachley.
