WT Surfers get barreled at J-Bay,
Quiksilver Bowlriders hosts the best skaters in the country
Davey Brand heads for France at the King of the Groms finals.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 1 November, 2009 : - - The WCT rolls into South Africa for some epic waves at Supertubes in J-Bay. It’s the halfway mark for the tour and the European guys have some unlucky draws, facing off against each other in several of the opening heats. A couple of really close calls didn’t go their way. Mickey Picon went down to CJ Hobgood by .07 and Jeremy Flores lost by half a point to Dean Morrison. Michel Bourez was on fire, taking out Mick Fanning on day 2, getting barrelled off his nut to rack up a ten point ride in the process. Michel was taken down in the next round by a rampaging Dane Reynolds but his 9th place finish helped move him up almost ten spots to 25th on the tour.

The next segment highlights the mash of old and new as Quiksilver hosts the annual Bowlriders competition at the Wave House Snake Run. The crowds turned out to witness the top skaters in the country throw down at this popular event. Things got a little crazy with the addition of a massive extension and a rainbow rail midway down the run. Guys Like Dallas Oberholzer, Kalvin Macmillan, Yann Horrowitz, George Van Blerk, Brett Shaw, Ryan Arends, Andrew Carrie and JP Du Preez mixed things up, stringing together trannie tricks, airs, grinds and tech flippery all at high speed, but it was Yann Horowitz who put the magic together in the final and walked away with the trophy and the R10 000 cash.

Alex Giraud and Ross Mcgouran were out from Europe to judge the comp, put on a demo and get some time to skate a bit of South Africa. They weren’t disappointed by the local talent and their demo before the final really blew minds. Skating at the international level is another story altogether. Their prowess at Wave House, the Mandini Bowl, the Indigo ramps and the Richards Bay Park is a thing to behold and we have it all on film.

From our backyard we follow one of our own surfers to France, where Davey Brand goes head to head against the best juniors at the global King of the Groms. Davey charged through to the semis but was eliminated by Gabriel Medina from Brazil who went on to win the event with two 10’s in the final.

Catch up on some world class surfing and skating on episode 20 of Boardriders TV on Supersport 1 at 6pm.
