    CREATORS: The day Jim Russi graduated and collected his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brooks Institute in 1979 he left Santa Barbara for Hawaii’s North Shore and a week-long surf vacation. Once there however, that one-week vacation stretched into a 35 plus year adventure capturing the winter surf action on the North Shore.

    BIG-WAVE: Lucas "Chumbo" Chianca won the World Surf League Big Wave Tour Nazaré Challenge after incredible performances at the Praia do Norte big-wave break in Nazaré, Portugal. The second-ever BWT event at Nazaré ran over two days after dangerous conditions threatened the competitors following the opening heats on Saturday. Big Wave Tour Commissioner Mike Parsons, alongside the judging panel, rated conditions a Bronze coefficient with wave faces in the 25-to-35-foot category.

  • Creators: Patrick Trefz finds our collective water connection

    CREATORS: Patrick Trefz is a surfer and photographer from Santa Cruz who has built a solid portfolio of images from his global travels. As comfortable in the wilds of Alaska as he is in the sidewalk sophistication of a Biarritz cafe, Patrick’s work is born out of travelling. He’s taken his visual sensibility and branched into film with projects like “Thread” and “Idiosyncracies”. With his latest project “Surfer’s Blood” his technical chops had to increase tenfold in the editing bay to attain the vision he had in mind. The new film is launching this month.

    INDUSTRY: The World Tour's Hawaii events are in jeopordy as the World Surf League and Honolulu officials argue over event dates and permits. The conflict started when the WSL requested moving the Billabong Pipe Masters from December to January to score better surf. In return Honolulu mayor Kirk Caldwell said this plan was a no-go.     ISA WORLDS: Led by an impressive three individual medals, Team USA rose to the top of World Longboarding and was crowned Team Gold Medalist at the 2018 ISA World Longboard Surfing Championship at Riyue Bay in Wanning, China.

    ISA WORLDS: Team USA moved into pole position on the penultimate day of competition at the 2018 ISA World Longboard Surfing Championship. Despite losing Kevin Skvarna and Tony Silvagni to the Repechage Rounds, both surfers were able to regain their composure and advance in the competition, making USA the last team to have all four competitors remaining in the event.
