Pancho Sullivan wins 20thh Annual Xcel Pro at Sunset
The 20th Annual Xcel Pro has been completed in six to eight foot surf at
Sunset Beach in perfect off shore conditions. Winning the event for the
third time in six years was the north shore´s veteran Pancho Sullivan.
Sullivan took advantage of the west peaks as he drove hard off the top and
bottom of every set wave he caught to take a commanding lead through the
thirty-five minute final. Last year´s winner Fred Pattachia made a gallant
effort in the last eight minutes of the heat as he waited deeper in the
Sunset Point take off zone and scored a 9.5 score on a huge tube ride with
fourty seconds left, to go from fourth to second place. Rounding the final
was Nick Muscroft from Australia and eighteen year old Nathan Carroll from
Sunset Beach ending fourth.
In the Longboard Expression Session, Haleiwa´s Dino Miranda took first with
Kapono Nihina from Wahiawa second and Joey Valentin third.

Xcel Pro Day 2 complete, final set for Wednesday
4 November 2003: Day two of the Xcel Pro has been completed at Sunset Beach with rising surf
and clean conditions. Six to eight foot surf had the Xcel Pro looking like
it´s usual power surfing form as competitors rode west peak Sunset into big
bottom turns and sweeping cutbacks. Highlights include advancing locals Ross
Williams who dominated his third round heat with two big tube riding scores
as well as Matt Thompson from Australia, who won the "Freestyle Longest Tube
Ride" award.
Other heat winners included Charlie Carroll, Pancho Sullivan, Jesse Merle
Jones, Nathan Carroll, Makua Rothman and last years winner Fred Pattachia.
Surf is forecasted to stay within the eight foot range through Wednesday so
there is a high probability of the event completing tomorrow. Along with the
Xcel Pro, an expression session with Hawaii´s top longboarders will run
before the surfing final. They include Lance Hookano, Dino Miranda, Kanoa
Dahlin, Joey Valentin, Kapono Nahina and Kekoa Auwae.

Xcel Pro Completes Day One of Competition
1 November 2003: The Xcel Pro completed rounds one and two (heats one through nine) today in
six to eight foot surf at Sunset Beach to launch the north shore of Oahu
into another winter professional contest season. At 8:00 A.M. this morning,
ten foot west peaks took first round trial surfers into the six man
competition and by mid day, consistent eight foot surf had round two
competitors working through long connecting waves from the middle break to
the inside.
Standouts include big wave veteran Arnold Dowling, former bodyboard champ
Kainoa McGee, Kauai surfers Aamion Goodwin and Kamalei Alexander along with
Ewa Beach teen sensation Dustin Quizon. The Australian contigent also made
their mark on the event with Adam Robertson, Ben Dunn and Anthony Walsh
advancing to round three with big wave surfer Paul Patersen yet to compete
in round two after convincingly winning his trials heat.
