| Bronze shark beached along with many sardines
Mr Price Night Surfing
ASP 1 star WQS Mens event
North Beach,Durban-South Africa
2 - 4 July 2004
Mr Price Night Surfing WQS event cancelled
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 02 July 2004: - -
ASP Africa advise as follow;- We are currently experiencing a massive sardine run in Natal. This has led to the shark nets being removed from all the beaches along the entire Natal coast. We have had to cancel the Mr Price Night Surfing on instruction from the Natal Sharks board and Durban City as they will not allow any surfing at night.
The problem is not the sardines but the game fish (Dolphins and sharks) who follow the sardines and then get caught in the nets. It has been estimated that it could be quite a few days before the nets will be replaced.
We will be going ahead with the Mr Price Pro and will be starting on Sunday. We have permission from the City to go ahead with that event. We will have two IRB in the water with trained para-medics should any problem arise. This happened two years ago and we also stopped the contest when shoals of sardines approached the North Beach area.
We have notified all the other regional offices to this problem as well as the cancelling of the Night Surfing. I can be contacted on the following site office number if you wish to contact me. 27 31 3326182.
Editors note:
Like the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, and the migration of the wildebeest across the Serengeti in east Africa, the annual sardine run along South Africa´s east coast is fast becoming a major tourist attraction.
Each year during June and July, huge shoals of sardines make their way north to the waters of holiday province KwaZulu Natal. The shoals, which can be several miles long, sometimes look like a giant sea monster, shimmering in the sun, weaving through the water. And they draw crowds; thousands of sharks, dolphins, and other predatory fish follow the sardines, birds hover above, and masses of people line the shores to watch.
