    Jim Beam Surftag Series

Tassie surfers steal the show at Vic. Surftag

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, Sydney, January 31 2005; - Tasmania’s Clifton Boardriders have won the Victorian qualifying round of the 2005 Jim Beam National Surftag Series.

In their first ever Surftag appearance the five surfers from Clifton Beach easily won the One-hour final scoring 75.8. Held in tricky one-metre waves the Clifton team opened up an early lead and never looked like being beaten. Local Club the Peninsula Surfriders scraped home in second position to earn a spot in the Jim Beam Surftag Grand Final to be held in Sydney 12th March 2005. In a very tight finish the Peninsula Club finished with 64.4 points with Phillip Island close behind on 61 and Torquay finishing in fourth position with 60.2 points.

Dustin Hollick was the standout in the Final for Clifton scoring 26.2, which was the highest 3-wave combination of the event. Dustin also won a $1000 BOSE sound system for scoring the best Powerwave of the event by locking in an 8-point ride during the final. Peninsula’s best was Craig Watson who scored 19.4 in the Final with Glyndon Ringrose scoring 17.8 for Phillip Island and Jirah Laws 18.8 for Torquay. Finishing fifth overall was 13th Beach Boardriders with Peninsula’s B team finishing in sixth position.

Clifton’s team included Hollick, Jy Johanasson (12.5), James Holmer-Cross (15.8), Martin Paradisis (12.3) and Mock Barrett (5). Clifton also received 4 bonus points for finishing the final first.

The Jim Beam National Surftag Series will now head to Sydney for the NSW qualifying event with up to thirty teams expected to battle it out for the eight Grand Final qualifying spots up for grabs.

Defending National Surftag Champs North Steyne will go into the event as favourites with last years runners-up Umina kicking off their 2005 campaign. North Steyne, Curl Curl, North Narrabeen and Norah Head have all decided to enter two teams showing the depth their Club’s have in the open ranks.

The top sixteen Clubs from around Australia will then compete in the National Grand Final to be held in Sydney on March 12, 2005. Also to be run on March 12 will be a Surftag State of Origin Event involving all four States.
