    Jim Beam Surftag Series

North Steyne surfers win NSW Surftag

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, Sydney, February 7 2005 – North Steyne Boardriders have defended their title as NSW Surftag Champions and will go into the Jim Beam Surftag Grand Final as the No.1 seed. North Steyne scored 88.5 in the final well clear off Curl Curl who finished second on 66 points. Northern Beach’s Clubs filled the top three spots with North Narrabeen placing third (58.6) with Central Coast Club Umina finishing in fourth place scoring 55.8.

Beau Mitchell was the standout for North Steyne in the final scoring 20.8 for his two waves. Due to the small waves event organisers made the change of each surfer having to catch only two waves instead of three giving competitors more time to choose their waves. Mitchell was well backed up by teammates Dayyan Neve (18.8), Paul Evans (15.5), Kurt Jacobs (13) and Heath Irving (16.4). Curl Curl’s best during the final was Ross Castel (17.4) with Nathan Webster scoring 23.4 for North Narrabeen and Glen Hall 18.4 for Umina.

With the top eight teams qualifying to the Jim Beam Surftag Grand Final all teams first priority was to make it to the Semi Final stage of the event and joining the four teams listed above will be Elouera, Avoca, Werri and Curl Curl “B”. Showing the depth that their Club has Curl Curl finished with both their “A” and “B” teams in the top eight which will give them two chances of winning the title of Australia’s No.1 Club on their home break come March 12.

Elouera Boardriders started slowly in the second semi but caught up midway through the heat due to Joel Bonning (19.1) and Todd Mingram (17.1) posting some high scores. Unfortunately for Elouera Kirk Jenkins was unable to continue with the big scores as the clock wound down in the tiny conditions. Joel Etherington, Wylie Fowler, Bonning, Mingram and Jenkins made up Elouera’s team.

Semi 2, Umina 93.8, North Narrabeen 79.8, Curl Curl “B” 79.3, Elouera 63.1. The Jim Beam National Surftag Series will now head to Coolangatta for the QLD qualifying round which will be held at Duranbah Beach on 19th February 2005. Teams to qualify to the Grand Final through the Victoria and Western Australia qualifying events include Margaret River “A” and “B”, Clifton Boardriders (Tas) and Peninsula Boardriders (Vic).
