    Jim Beam Surftag Series

Snapper surfers back in the winners circle

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, Coolangatta, February 20 2005 – In an awesome display of tag team surfing Snapper Rocks Surfriders have taken out the QLD Round of the 2005 Jim Beam National Surftag Series at Duranbah Beach, Coolangatta.

Snapper finished with a massive 121 points in the final well clear of second place Alley Boardriders who scored 100.8 with Palm Beach close behind on 98.4 and North End 72.6 to place fourth.

In claiming victory the Snapper team posted the highest combined score of the entire Surftag Series so far by scoring 121 points in the Final. Shane Bevan surfed first for Snapper in the relay style format scoring 24.1 with Jay Phillips next up posting 24.3 followed by Shaun Gossman who scored 27.1. After three surfers Snapper had scored 75.5 but rival club Currumbin Alley had locked in some big scores as well that included a 27.2 thanks to Mark Richardson to be only 3.6 points behind, Snappers fourth and fifth surfers Jai Boyce and Paul Ward kept the big scores rolling in for Snapper scoring 21.2 and 20.3 with Ward securing 4 bonus points for finishing his 3 allocated waves first and returning to the tag area.

Alley’s Andrew Levitt (15.8) and Scott Hutchinson (13.1) had trouble late in the final finding the right waves to score big on with Palm Beach’s James Brydon bringing his team home strongly scoring 18.6 to almost finish ahead of Alley. North End’s best during the Final was Scott Wilden who scored 23.9, North End played catch up from the start in the final and showed during the earlier rounds that they are capable of scoring highly under the Surftag format.

With the top four QLD teams qualifying to the Jim Beam Surftag Grand Final it is the first time Alley, Palm Beach and North End will compete in a Surftag Grand Final. All three Club’s are looking at travelling with large numbers down to Sydney with the Grand Final to be held at Curl Curl Beach, 12th March 2005. On the other hand Snapper have competed in the last three Surftag Grand Final’s with the Club claiming the National Title in 2002.

The Sixteen teams to compete in the 2005 Jim Beam Surftag Grand Final are,
