Umina Surfers Win National Surftag Title
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, Sydney, March 14, 2005 – Umina Boardriders from New South Wales Central Coast have won the 2005 Jim Beam National Surftag Series. The Umina Club received $7,000 for the win but more importantly have become Australia’s No.1 Boardriding Club for 2005.
Snapper Rocks Surfriders finished second followed by North Steyne Boardriders with fourth place going to Curl Curl Boardriders.
Jim Beam Surftag Grand Final Scores Umina 79.7 $7,000 Snapper Rocks 76 $3,000 North Steyne 64.5 $2,000 Curl Curl 60.4 $1,000
The Umina team got off to a perfect start in the final and had a huge lead mid way through the one-hour final. Umina’s first surfer Glen “Micro” Hall posted the highest score of the final locking in 22 points for his three waves ridden. Next up for Umina was Drew Courtney who scored 17.9 followed by Darren Stapelton who maintained the momentum for Umina scoring 20.8. After each teams third surfer Umina had scored 60.7, North Steyne 42.9, Snapper Rocks 38.4 and Curl Curl 38.
It wasn’t until late in the final that the Snapper Rocks surfers came alive with Shaun Gossman scoring 13.1 followed up by some amazing surfing from Jay Phillips who score 21.5. The fantastic effort from Phillips lifted Snapper from third to second and only three points shy of victory. Umina’s final two surfers Wade Rixon (7.5) and Duane Artis (10.5) had just done enough to hold off the strong finishing Snapper Rocks team and claim the title of Australia’s No.1 Club.
North Steyne kept within reach of Umina for most of the Final due to some strong rides from Beau Mitchell (15) and Dayyan Neve (14.6) but when Snapper’s final two surfers dominated the line up North Steyne’s Heath Irving (10.6) and Victor Levett (9) where unable to find the bigger and better waves to make a late charge.
The Curl Curl Club who has finished third and fourth in previous Surftag Grand Final’s had an unhappy final and when Ian Castel fell off on two of his three rides the Curl Curl team had slipped into fourth position and never really got back on track to threaten the other three teams. Curl Curl’s best during the final was Jarrad Howse who scored 19 points.
