Brazilians win at International Students Surfing Challenge

    International Students Surfing Challenge

    Duranbah Beach, Gold Coast
    19 - 20 March 2005

Day 2: Brazilians Dominate Inaugural International Students Surfing Challenge

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 20 March 2005: - - 17 year old Brazilian student Alex Charcon today won the inaugural International Student Surf Challenge in testing metre and half thumping beach breaks at Duranbah Beach, Gold Coast.

The final was a 3 way tussle between fellow Brazilian Guto Morin, and Australian Mitchell Hayes, first prize still up for grabs right until the final siren. The young Brazilian’s victory was set up by his 9.0 wave half way through the 30 minute final, judges rewarding him for a series of radical re-entries and finishing the wave with a big forehand aerial maneuver to finish the wave.

Guto Morin was closest to his young countryman scoring well for a radical backhand attack, but could not find a wave with enough scoring potential to overtake the young grommet he surfs with regularly at Snapper Rocks in-between classes.

Aussie Mitchell Hayes finished 3rd, and another Brazilian student Lauro Garcia placing 4th. Japanese students also performed well but were eliminated in the semi-finals, as was the last student from France.

Not only was the event a celebration of surfing, but a celebration of different cultures as well, with a range of beach activities and foods from different cultures for all to sample.
