Great surfing by junior girls in Roxy Surf Jam
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 April, 2005 : - - The cream of the country’s 20 year-old and younger female surfers produced an outstanding display of competitive surfing in the first Roxy Surf Jam event of 2005 held in ideal half to one metre (2-3 foot) waves and offshore winds at the Kitchen Window surf break in Jeffreys Bay on the weekend.
National team member and international campaigner Rosanne Hodge from East London led the charge, winning both the premier U20 Pro Juniors and the U18 titles and picking up the Most Radical Manoeuvre award for the U18’s as well.
The tall, blond surf-star-in-the-making dominated proceedings in the vital Pro Junior final, clinching the R1 800 winner’s prize-money and the vital ratings points on the Pro Surf Tour ratings. Hodge was pushed all the way by Tammy-Lee Smith (Salt Rock, KZN) in the final, which produced an extremely high standard of surfing that spoke volumes for the future of the sport.
Twins Kate and Sarah Matthews sewed up third and fourth places after moving to nearby Cape St Francis from Durban earlier this year, with Sarah also reaching the final of the U18 division where she again took fourth place.
Hodge’s victory in the U18’s was just as close with Chantal Rautenbach from Melkbosstrand being relegated to the runner-up berth and Jeffreys Bay local Laetitia Lee coming out of her Matric influenced contest retirement and using all her local knowledge to advance to the final where she secured a meritorious third place finish.
The U16 division was another hard fought affair where Kommetjie’s Tarryn Chudleigh surfed an outstanding final to finish just ahead of national team member Nikita Robb, thereby preventing a clean sweep of the titles by East Londoners. Robb had the satisfaction of receiving the Most Radical Manoeuvre award however, for an innovative aerial floater that impressed everyone present.
Third spot went to Rautenbach and fourth to Scottburgh’s Julia Morris who continues to impress after winning several U14 titles last year.
The find of the tournament was Alice McGregor from East London who defeated a trio of better known U14 competitors in Bianca Buitendag (Victoria Bay, S/Cape), Heidi Palmboom (Bluff, KZN) and Tanika Hoffman (Kirstenhof, CTN), who placed in that order in the final. McGregor dominated the division for her first victory on the national stage and earned the manoeuvre award to boot.
The Roxy Surf Jam series is supported by Saltwater Girl, Mentos and Roxy Sunnies and sanctioned by Surfing South Africa. The U20 division is also accredited by ASP Africa with the results of this division counting towards the Pro Surf Tour (PST) girls Pro Junior title for 2005.
The second event in the 2005 series is scheduled for Cape Town on the weekend 23 & 24 July while the grand finale, where all the prize-money amounts are doubled, will take place at New Pier in Durban on the weekend 15 & 16 October.
