FCS Queensland Junior Regional Titles 2005
GOLD COAST
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 11 April, 2005 : - - Over 200 surfers took part in the FCS Queensland Junior Regional Titles held on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, and North Stradbroke Island. All were surfing for regional titles, and places in their respective regions teams for the FCS Queensland Titles to be held at the Sunshine Coast on June 18-19.
Competition was held both Saturday and Sunday in solid metre plus beach breaks at Palm Beach, with boys and girls from 10 to 17 years of age competing. High performance surfing was the norm and some of the under 12 and under 14’s had a battle against a strong current and waves and there were some brave performances from some of the younger boys and girls, some only 10 years old.
The under 18 Boy’s final was a nail biting thriller turning into a 3 way battle between Wesley Sieberhagen (Tullebudgeera), Aaron Peck (Palm Beach), and Michael Levitt (Palm Beach), the lead see-sawing throughout the 20 minute final. Sieberhagen took out the blue ribbon final, his first and last waves the key to his win, his first wave which saw him take off 300 metres from the shore and a large set and tear 2 on-edge backhand re-entries on the largest part of the wave before surfing it right through to score a 7.67 from the judges. Palm Beach surfer Aaron Peck almost stole the final in the dying seconds, scoring a wave which included a tube and several radical turns but in the end it was not enough, falling a mere 0.17 short of Seiberhagen’s total. Another Palm Beach surfer Michael Levitt was only a further 0.93 behind Peck to place 3rd.
The Under 16 final was dominated for most of the heat by Kane Powell (Palm Beach), who found wave after wave which he surfed with power style and flair to take a strangle-hold of the final. Powell looked unbeatable, until Coolangatta pair Blake Ainsworth and Josh Lee fought back with a good wave each to be in striking distance of Powell, but both ran out of time to find the wave they needed to win the final.
Arini Mason capped off a successful weekend for the Mason family winning the under 18 girls final, younger brother Canning winning the Under 14 boys, and little sister Sarah (10 years old) placing 3rd in the under 14 girls. Tugun’s Tiana McNeven won the Under 16 girls from Burleigh surfer Hannah Van Druten, Tyson Edwards (Miami) winning the under 12 boys, and Madison Hayles winning the under 14 girls.
