Jim Beam SA Longboard Championships
Surfing South Africa Cape Peninsula 24 30 April 2005
WP take honours once again
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 9 May, 2005 : - - Puma Western Province dominated the 2005 Jim Beam SA Longboard Championships held in the Peninsula recently beating KZN and EP into second and third place respectively in the Team event with WP longboarders winning all but three of the individual titles at stake.
Muizenberg and Long Beach Kommetjie played host to the event over the seven days of competition with the finals taking place in small but contestable surf at Muizenberg on Saturday April 30th.
In the Open Men's division World number three and Surfer of the contest, Matthew Moir was in outstanding form and took his umpteenth title in this division with relative ease.
Muizenberg local Kwezi Qika took honours in the junior division and was awarded the Matthew Hough Memorial Trophy which goes to the best Junior surfer in the tournament while Simone Robb won the Open Women's title.
Simone's husband Allan made it a family double when he won the Masters Final and WP Longboard stalwart and new SALSA Secretary Bernie Shelly triumphed in the newly created Women's Over 40 Division.
SALSA President Deon Bing, surfing for WP, won the Senior Men's title, team-mates Vinita Ooshuizen and Greg Stokes took the Under 18 girls final and Legends titles respectively while former WP surfer Andrew Lenton won the Veterans trophy. Fellow EP longboarder Greg Smith won the Grandmasters Division and Hugh Thompson, the Super Vets winner was the only KZN participant to take a trophy back to Durban.
In a clear illustration of the versatility of Longboard surfing 67 year old Jimmy Bell won the super Legends title while 14 year old Ashwyn Roberts earned his first ever national title when he won the Under 15 division.
