Snap Off the Lip Competition
New South Wales’ Premier Surf Film Competition Takes OffTitle
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 2 February, 2006 : - - Newcastle Live Sites and Firelight Productions in association with the Vodafone Surfest Presented by Billabong are excited to announce that prospective barrelling Bertoluccis, surfing Spielbergs and tubing Tarantinos have until Friday, March 31 to get their entries in to Snap Off the Lip; New South Wales’ finest surf film competition.
The 2006 version of Snap Off The Lip has gotten bigger, fatter and gnarlier than last year’s contest. All filmmakers have again been challenged to produce a five-minute film relevant to surfing. The locations used by filmmakers must be chosen from New South Wales’ abundance of beautiful beaches and located somewhere between Tweed Heads in the far north and Green Cape in the deep south.
Twelve finalists will be chosen and their films will blast onto the big screen on Friday, April 7 at Wheeler Place, Newcastle, which is located right next door to the Civic Theatre on Hunter Street. The evening will kick-off a huge weekend of spectacular professional surfing action planned for the finals weekend of the four-star World Qualifying Series Vodafone Open to be held at Newcastle from March 28 until April 9.
The best entries in Snap Off The Lip will score cash prizes, industry gear and frontline exposure to all the movers and shakers in the surf industry. The films will be judged by an expert panel of film and surf industry professionals. Last year’s winner Macario De Souza can attest to the fantastic opportunities that have fallen at his feet since taking out the major prize in 2005.
“Snap Off The Lip is an awesome competition and gave me my start,” Mr De Souza said. “After my Snap Off The Lip win I received plenty of offers for work and now am just finishing a feature length surf documentary that is due for a major release this year,” the surf movie maker added.
Snap Off the Lip was first held in Sydney and was enormously successful, before moving in 2005 to the state’s second largest city and spiritual home of surfing, Newcastle. Last year’s public showing saw massive crowds spilling over the entire Wheeler Place area to witness the unearthing of new talent and some incredible surfing footage.
The judges, surfing celebrities and big crowd enjoyed everything from magic surfing portals allowing control of a surfer’s shore break destiny to massive waves at secret spots being gouged by local mystery men who only come out of the shed when the waves are breaking at over 10 feet!.
The Snap Off The Lip organisers are also conducting a free video production and editing workshop for those that require advice on belting their footage into shape or need to know a few new tricks of the trade. The workshop will be held in Newcastle on February 17.
