Rip Curl Pro countdown - Peniche, Portugal

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 27 March, 2006 : - - Expectations are high for this year’s Rip Curl Pro, in Peniche, which will take place from the 7th to the 9th of April. Being the 9th stage of the World Qualifying Series (WQS) and the first international event taking place this year in Europe, this contest will also count for the EPSA ratings. A three in one that will make surfers eager for collecting some good results and the 10.000 dollars of prize-money.

And all is set for this 18th edition of the Rip Curl Pro, a one star WQS event. After the previous editions, always with peak conditions, once more Alfarroba will provide mobile structures that will allow the contest to move from eventual poor surf in the reefbreak of Lagido to higher quality surf, either at the legendary Supertubos or Almagreira’s beachbreak. Wherever the good waves are, we’ll be there!

Many good professional surfers from all over the world and especially Europe are expected. France, Spain, England… some of their best representatives will be smashing the Portuguese waves.

In spite of his presence not being confirmed yet, Frenchman Patrick Beven may well be one of the rising stars at this Rip Curl Pro. Beven is the current european champion and also current WQS number two. After winning the latest six star event, Peniche may well be his next stop.

As for the Portuguese, Tiago Pires and Justin Mujica will have their hands full Newcastle, Australia, but some of the best national surfers are getting themselves warmed up to show everybody what Portuguese surfers are made of. Names like José Gregório, João Antunes or Ruben Gonzalez, among many others, will surely be giving headaches to the international contingent, in spite of the tough competition that is expected.

With almost 20 years of history, Portuguese surfers only won the Rip Curl Pro for three times: João Antunes, in 1996, Rodrigo Herédia, in 1997, and Marcos Anastácio, in 1998… but 2006 may well be the year of Portugal’s comeback.

“As I’ve been told, Portuguese top athletes are extremely eager to keep the title home, and some are even going for this year’s European title, so expect nothing less that a good run,” said António Pedro, from Alfarroba, the event producer.

So, all is set and ready for another big and smashing surf competition in Peniche, from the 7th to the 9th of April. The surfing world’s eyes will be for sure there, and, hopefully, so will you.

Rip Curl Pro is produced by Alfarroba for Rip Curl and Peniche City Hall. Rip Curl Pro promete espectáculo nas ondas de Peniche
 
A nona etapa do Circuito Mundial de Surf de Qualificação (WQS) e primeira do circuito europeu (EPSA), o Rip Curl Pro, irá decorrer nos próximos dias 7, 8 e 9 de Abril, em Peniche. A 18ª edição desta prova, pontuada com uma estrela no circuito de qualificação, promete espectáculo e emoções fortes nas ondas daquela famosa península.

Mais uma vez sob a organização da Alfarroba, a mais-valia desta prova é o facto de ser um evento móvel com base na praia do Baleal, em frente à onda conhecida como Lagido, mas com as praias de Supertubos e Almagreira como alternativas. Esta característica de mobilidade permanente garante aos surfistas que visitem Peniche a possibilidade de desfrutar da melhor qualidade possível nas ondas. Por isso, o Rip Curl Pro é uma das provas mais antecipadas por todos os atletas que correm ambos os circuitos.

A praia de Supertubos é conhecida pelas direitas e esquerdas cavadas que proporcionam tubos perfeitos sendo, desde logo, um espectáculo garantido para o público e uma fonte de adrenalina para os competidores. O Lagido é um reefbreak onde parte uma esquerda longa e manobrável que permite aos surfistas fazerem manobras arrojadas desde o outside até ao inside, enquanto que a onda da Almagreira quebra sobre um fundo misto de areia e rocha, o que proporciona ondas muito manobráveis.

Entre a lista de inscritos neste evento encontram-se já o bi-campeão nacional Ruben Gonzalez, Nuande “Pekel”Silva, o luso-germânico Marlon Lipke, os britânicos veteranos do circuito europeu Russell Winter e Spencer Hargraves, bem como Tânio Barreto (ex-campeão brasileiro profissional), que irá defender o seu título, conquistado na edição do ano passado do Rip Curl Pro.

Destaque também para os atletas franceses Fabrice Gelez e Alan Le Texier, para os espanhóis Pablo Gutierrez, Kepa Acero, Pablo Solar, Hodei Collazo e Txaber Trojaola, para o australiano Sam Watson e para o inglês Nathan Phillips. Espera-se ainda uma grande adesão de surfistas portugueses, que terão oportunidade de medir forças com os atletas internacionais.

“Esta é uma excelente oportunidade para os atletas nacionais começarem a ligar os seus motores competitivos,” afirmou António Pedro, da Alfarroba. “Depois de um Inverno com boas ondas e com o circuito nacional à porta, todo o treino deve ser aproveitado, sobretudo um que proporcione um nível elevado de surf, como será normal encontrar no Rip curl Pro,” concluiu.

Os olhos do mundo do surf irão, por certo, estar postos nas excelentes ondas que a Península de Peniche tem para oferecer aos milhares de turistas que visitam a região todos os anos. Está tudo a postos para mais um grande espectáculo de surf em Peniche, entre os dias 6 e 9 de Abril.
