The event was held every other year until 2002 in Durban. In 2003, the World Junior Surfing Championships were held in Durban independently from the World Surfing Games, in order to provide a singular focus for world junior surfing. The following year, the contest was held in Papenoo, Tahiti as the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships, which is the official name of the event.

The World Championships, also called World Surfing Games, date back to 1964, with the first event being held in Manly, Australia. Bernard "Midget" Farelly won the Open Men's division and Phyllis O'Donnel won in the Open Women's Division.
