Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 23 February, 2007 : - - With a record amount of more than 120 surfers competing, the ALAS Latin Tour third stage, the Reef Classic Latin Pro Perú, six stars event that will deliver 17.000 dollars and 6.000 rating points, started today in Punta Rocas with three to four feet perfect waves.
24 heats were held today, 16 of the Open Pro round one and 8 of the Pro Junior round one. It isn't the latest new that the Peruvian surfing level is high; this is why today´s heats gave a good show to the spectators. In good waves with good surfers, all the heats were tough.
The day best surfer was the Mexican star Oscar Moncada, who did a combined score of 16.33 on his best two waves -8.83 and 7.5-. On the best of them, Moncada smoothly conected seven maneuvers, doing what was needed for his wave to be the day best single wave scroing ride, beating the Costa Rican Gilberth Brown -second- and Ecuadorian Juan Pablo Cattán -third-.
A happy Moncada, who comes from a first round disqualification at the last stage in Chile, said once he was out of the water: "I haven´t had a good good time on the ALAS Latin Tour, but today I feel I surfed like I know. It was a good heat, the waves were good, you have to know how to read it to get the maximum approach of it. This is only the beginning, we still have lots of round to come, the contest is going to be good and I hope to keep it positive; God first."
Meanwhile, Ecuadorian Sebastián Santos also performed well on his first round heat, scoring 15.00 points on his best two waves to beat Roberto Meza from Peru-second- and Gustavo Betancourt from Puerto Rico -third-, his combined score was the day second best. Santos surfed fast and smooth, scoring a 7.00 and an 8.00, he said once out of the water:
"I was feeling nervous at the beginning of the heat, because I was facing to experienced veterans that know what to do when they compete, but after I rode my first wave I gained trust; I felt that it was my moment and gave everything I have, so I risked on my last wave and the score came with 8.00 points and the first place."
Among other results on the Open Pro, the tico surfer Nino Medrano along with the last event Champ, Alardreson Martins from Brazil and the Peruvians Gabriel Villarán and Salvador Voysest scored more than 13.00 points to win their respective heats. Villarán was once again a standout, scoring 8.00 points on a single maneuver, after he landed a high double grab aereal that was perfectly landed.
Out of the 16 heats that went to the water today in the Open Pro, six were won by Peru, two by Brazil, two by Mexico, two by Venezuela, two by Argentina, one by Costa Rica and one by Ecuador.
On the Pro Junior division, the day highest combined score was made by the Chilean Manuel Selman, who scored 14.17 to beat José Manuel Trujillo from México -second - and Guillermo González from Peru -third-. Meanwhile, one of the biggest promises of Peruvian Surfing, 13 years old Carlos Mario Zapata, scored 8.67 on his best wave -the highest single wave score of the division-, beating his fellow country men Hernán Barrera -second- and Ecuadorian David Villareal -third-.
The contest will continue tomorrow at 7:00 am -local time-, Open Pro second, third and fourth round will be held, also the Pro Junior round two and Ladies round one. The Reef Classic Latin Pro Perú 2007 is possible thanks to the support of Movistar, Gillette Prestobarba Excel, Helados Lamborgini, Saga Falabella and Teatrico Producciones. It is a contest organized by the Latin American Surfing Association -ALAS-.
