Team Australia on its way to Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 April, 2007 : - - Team Australia will be flying out on Wednesday 2nd May and will be returning on Wednesday 16th May via Sydney Airport. Defending Champions - Australia. In 2006 in Brazil, Team Australia won the U18 boys (Julian Wilson), runner up in the U18 girls (Sally Fitzgibbon), won the U16 boys (Owen Wright) and the “tag team” event.
In 2007, the following nations will contest the championships. Portugal, New Zealand, Japan, France, United States of America, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Jamaica, Switzerland, Brazil, Chile, Canada, Barbados, South Africa, Ireland, Hawaii, Venezuela, Australia, England, Italy, Guatemala, Spain, Israel, Peru, Germany, Costa Rica, Somalia, Morocco, Ecuador and Tahiti.
Team Australia sponsors: Australian Sports Commission, Coastalwatch, Domain Casuarina Beach Resort, Waves magazine, Boost Mobile, Endura, Gorilla Grip and FCS.
Contest Format The championships include three age divisions, U18 boys, U18 girls, U16 boys plus a “tag team” event. This event allows for a repercharge round allowing surfers a “second chance” in each round. The team who accumulates the most points through the 4 divisions will be named “Championship team”
Judging Criteria: “The surfer must perform radical controlled maneuvers in the most critical sections of a wave with speed, power and flow to maximize scoring potential. Innovative/progressive surfing as well as variety of repertoire (maneuvers) will be taken into consideration when awarding points for waves ridden.
The surfer who executes the criteria with the maximum degree of difficulty and commitment on the waves shall be rewarded with the higher score.” ISA Rule book link http://isasurf.org/ev_d_rbook.php .
